Mission

The Peer Health Advocates, a BACCHUS-affiliated peer education group, are dedicated to promoting mindful decision-making in order to support and encourage healthy living. We strive to fulfill this mission by:

  • creating and offering educational outreach activities, including active and passive programming, for and with Wesleyan students and groups
  • serving as a health referral resource for students
  • advocating for campus policy and procedure changes to improve student health
    and
  • serving on campus committees which address student health concerns.

Activities

In addition to staffing the WesWELL office and responding to student requests for assistance, the Peer Health Advocates are responsible for the development of educational activities and awareness events, often in conjunction with student organizations and health observances, on a wide variety of health issues. They offer workshops on alcohol and other drugs, sexual health, sexual violence, massage for stress relief and more. Click here to request a workshop.

Past activities have included tabling, leading discussions, movie and video showings, fliering campaigns, and even passing out flowers as random acts of kindness on World Kindness Day. They have also been instrumental in advocating for changes in University practices and policies which impact student health, such as the Residential Smoking Policy implemented in 2002.

Collaboration & Co-sponsorships

The Peer Health Advocates actively seek out opportunities to collaborate on educational events and co-sponsor programs with other student organizations throughout the year. If your organization is planning a health-related event and is looking for ideas or resources, you are encouraged to discuss it with a Peer Health Advocate or other WesWELL staff member early in your planning stages in order to see how we might be of assistance.  Funding assistance is also available through the HealthFull Words Fund.

The BACCHUS Network

Wesleyan’s Peer Health Advocates are affiliated with the The BACCHUS Network.  BACCHUS is an international organization comprised of over 1,000 campus-based peer education groups in the United States, Mexico, Canada, China, Australia, Hong Kong, and other countries. Affiliation with the network affords the PHAs opportunities to network with other peer health education groups through national and regional conferences and to develop new activities and awareness events based on the latest research in the field.
