The First Annual Laundromat Rock Show

Friday December 11, 1998, Basement of Butterfield B Dormatory

Engineered by Jenny Ma and Dan Steinhart, the first annual Butt B Laundromat show was a success meriting your support in the coming years. Four bands were booked to perform in the tiny square room adjoining the spacious Butterfield Laundromat facilities. We got to see three and a half acts before an overly polite Public Safety duo broke-up the show. Advertisement for the show consisted of a mass-email to selected indie-rockers. Do not be offended if you were not on the list because news was intended to be spread by word-of-mouth. The secret-agent promotion was effective enough to crowd the laundry room; some shoe-gazers even brought their dirty clothes.

Karen & Jenessa’s band (members Dan Muller and Jason Arnold) openedat the very prompt show, and played their while people hesitated to enter the claustrophobic room. The Great Kid Con (members Jason Schwartz, Chris Flygare and Jason something) made their [second?] Wesleyan appearance after semesters of secluded practicing. They played a loud & catchy rock set - vocals shared by Chris and Jason. I can’t help but make a comparison to the recently graduated trio El Guapo though I’m sure their influences are more from June of 44,Kid Dynamite and/or Rye Coalition. The Mussels, featuring the show sponsors Jenny and Dan as well as Chuck Legere and Dan something, were only able to give us a few punk rock ballads before Public Safety ended the show due to noise complaints. They joked about the beer bottles and lack of a party permit and were very courteous as the kids packed up the equipment. Nemesis Enforcer did not get to play. The biggest disappointment of the show was that the 16-year old Elvis impersonator (brought by Middletown resident Jason Arnold) did not have a chance to perform. Whoever carries on this new Wesleyan independent rock tradition, please grab the impersonator off Main Street and into our laundromat.
