Laura M. Flynn '89 recounts the harrowing true story of growing up with a
mother who was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, in Swallow the
Ocean (Counterpoint Press, 2008). In this powerful memoir, Flynn
remembers how she and her sisters played along as characters in their
mother’s fantasy world until her mother’s illness worsened and her father
finally filed for divorce and then custody of the children. Her book, which
took six years to write, also vividly recalls the world of San Francisco in
the 1970s.
