About the Writing Workshop

The Writing Workshop is located on the lower level of Downey House (rooms 103 and 104), on the corner of Court St. and High St.

The Writing Workshop consists of a staff of writing tutors who are available to meet with students during afternoons and evenings. We encourage students to consult the Workshop at every stage of the writing process. Students often meet with tutors when they want to discuss ideas for an upcoming assignment, edit a rough draft of a paper, or review a professor's comments on a completed work. There is no typical workshop client. Tutors are just as likely to meet with frosh as they are to meet with senior honors candidates. For scheduling information, see WRITING WORKSHOP HOURS.

Please direct your questions to the Ford Fellows. They can be reached by phone at x2440 or by email at writingworks@wesleyan.edu.

Frosh can apply for their own Writing Mentor at the beginning of each semester. For more information, see THE WRITING MENTOR PROGRAM.

Some classes have their own writing tutors. To find out if your class has a writing tutor, see COURSES WITH TUTORS.

The Writing Workshop also provides many  resources for non-native English speakers:

Non-Native speakers are encouraged to meet with Writing Workshop tutors during their office hours about the phrasing and structure of their academic essays either by making an appointment or visiting drop-in sessions. Informal English conversation hours can also be arranged.

Students seeking more help with English language issues should contact the Writing Program's specialist, Alice Hadler. Faculty and faculty advisors who have students with language and/or related cultural issues may also contact Alice Hadler, or urge their students to do so. Alice Hadler will help identify issues, arrange individual tutorials, set up regular contacts with the Ford Fellows in the Writing Workshop, or arrange a writing mentor. She also teaches courses that are designed appropriate for non-native or bilingual English speakers.

Please contact Professor Hadler at x2832 or ahadler@wesleyan.edu

If you are interested in becoming a writing tutor, see HOW TO BECOME A WRITING TUTOR.

The Ford Fellows are two recent Wesleyan graduates who run The Writing Workshop and help to train the writing tutors.

The Ford Fellows for 2008-2009 are Adam Tinkle and Michael Litwack. If you would like to contact them for any other information about the Writing Workshop, just call X2440 or email: writingworks@wesleyan.edu
