INFORMATION FOR FACULTY MEMBERS REQUESTING WRITING TUTORS:
I am pleased to announce that the writing tutor program has just
received a major gift from Bradley and Melissa Meyer, parents of Jacob
Meyer '01. More than 100 writing tutors will be working next year in
courses across the curriculum.
TO REQUEST A WRITING TUTOR:
If you would like tutors to work with your students:
Complete the "REQUEST FOR WRITING TUTORS"
sheet and return it to:
Anne Greene, Director of Writing Programs, Room 207, Downey House as
soon as possible.
Each tutor should be responsible for no more than 20 students. Feel
free to request several tutors.
THE WRITING TUTOR'S JOB:
Writing tutors help students organize and edit their papers.
Typically a tutor comments on papers-in-progress and meets with students
to discuss revisions. In large courses, the tutor may work in a
small, writing-intensive section. You are welcome to adjust your
tutor's duties to suit the design of your course. Please note,
however, that a tutor cannot grade papers.
SELECTION OF TUTORS:
You may select your own tutor or ask me to find someone for you.
Each spring a large number of students apply to work as tutors and go through a lengthy
selection process. Some of these applicants may be qualified for
your position.
It is best if the tutor has previously worked with you and knows the
subject matter of your course. If you have a candidate in mind,
please tell me now so that we can hire the student immediately.
TUTOR TRAINING AND COMPENSATION:
Writing tutors are trained in the Ford Teaching Seminar, a
semester-long course offering advice about teaching and academic writing.
The tutor's compensation includes one course credit, usually in English,
and a stipend of $400. Please call if you have any questions.
I look forward to working with you. Anne Greene,
