September
Bon Appetit Dining Worker Issues
* In our first meeting, we had three dining service workers come in and give their take on things. In our second meeting, Bon Appetit's resident manager Delmar Crim came in and answered questions. Both sessions proved informative. Through the Dining Committee, the WSA has ensured that:
1. All dining workers, including those making sushi, are receiving a living wage.
2. All workers at Usdan are allowed to eat wherever they want, and that in addition workers are given a space for breaks and lunch
3. Bon Appetit workers are given representation on the Dining Committee. Two workers will now sit on the committee to address general concerns about dining and help find ways to improve dining all over campus.
Finally, the WSA has demanded a revitalization of the Code Compliance Board, made up of students (from WSA and USLAC), faculty and the Wesleyan administration. The Board will be working on reviewing the Code for Service Contractors, which sets basic guidelines for the treatment of Wesleyan employees.
More questions? Check out the most current Code for Service Contractors (click here) and the most current contract between Bon Appetit and the union (it says Aramark but it's still effective - click here). Any more questions about dining can be addressed to FiFaC Chair Becky Weiss at rweiss@wesleyan.edu.
Party policies, fire fines, and grills
*Our Student Affairs Committee (SAC) has been working hard to make sure University policies are both safe and fair. Over the past month, they have:
1. Postponed a revised party policy until further conversation in the Student Life Committee, made up of both students and staff.
2. Helped created an appeals process for fire code violations.
3. Helped bring grills to the Butterfields courtyard! Three grills (for student use) are on their way and will arrive within the month.
President Roth visits the WSA
* In our last meeting, President Roth came to discuss his long-term vision for the school. Students were given time to ask questions.
