Source: The Wesleyan Argus Date: October 3, 2003 Byline: Rose Aresco I wanted to write a Wespeak to let the students know that, after much thought, I have decide not to accept points at Giuseppe’s. When first asked if I would like to accept points, I was thrilled and honored that I might be able to welcome so many Wesleyan students into my restaurant, especially those who might not have stopped in for a bite to eat otherwise. I had assumed, however, that I would not be the only Middletown business offering points, and, what’s more, I did not at first realize that the decision to accept points would perhaps, in time, do away with campus dining jobs as some have presumed or suggested. Every day I receive phone calls from people begging me not to accept points, and vaguely threatening me. And every day, Wesleyan students eagerly approach my register to ask, “Are you accepting points yet?” The answer has been, in part, no, I’m not because a card reader has not yet been installed in my store. Yet between the union pressure to avoid points and the student pressure to accept them, I’ve become really worn out. Giuseppe’s Pizza is a little mom & pop restaurant, and I am grateful that the Wesleyan students like my food so much. I am grateful that so many of them have worked for me over the years and continue to work for me now. I am grateful for the many happy pictures of students eating my pizza that cover my walls. I only wanted to make my food more accessible to everybody, but this is simply too much, and it seems that most people don’t want me to offer points anyway except for the majority of the students, in fact. The vote on confirms what students really wanted. You are always welcome to eat in Giuseppe’s, and, truly, I look forward to seeing you and saying hello the next time you stop in. But I cannot go ahead with the points for this year. I hope next year they will come up with a better solution for everybody. Wesleyan University's student governing body.
