Clarification of WSA Dining Resolution

On Tuesday, The Argus incorrectly summarized the recent Wesleyan Student Assembly (WSA) resolution on dining. The resolution, which was correctly outlined in the WSA meeting minutes and the Wespeak section of the same issue, was passed on Sunday evening in PAC 002.

In drafting the statement, the WSA sought to alleviate concern regarding off-campus points use. The members resolved to focus on improving on-campus dining, but also to provide a temporary off-campus points option, as promised to students. Such an option will be available only for the current academic year. It will also be offered exclusively after 8 p.m. and on weekends to limit competition with on-campus services.

The dining committee, which will now include one union steward as well as students and administrators, will evaluate the labor practices of any restaurant considered for points use. The committee will then present its findings to the WSA, who will approve the restaurant only if its labor practices are deemed acceptable. Contrary to Tuesday’s brief, the resolution did not stipulate that such a restaurant be unionized. It also made no adjustment to the freshman meal plan.

The assembly voted 31 to zero in favor of the resolution, with two abstentions.

A second resolution, promoted by the United Student Labor Action Coalition (USLAC), was also explained. Its plan—not the WSA resolution, as stated in the previous brief—received 764 student signatures in support but was not voted on because there was no motion to do so.

USLAC will continue to campaign against off-campus points use and support workers’ rights, which they believe will ultimately lead to the best possible campus dining program.
