Attention all freshmen! Did you play sports in high school? Are you looking for a great way to stay active and compete against other colleges around the country? If so, then Ultimate is the sport for you. Nietzsch Factor, the Wesleyan Men’s Ultimate Frisbee team is recruiting. There is NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. We’ll teach you how to throw. If you’re interested in joining the team, then click here: www.wesleyan.edu/wsa/nf . We will be having a couple laid back throwing sessions on September 5th and 7th at 4:30 at the base of Foss Hill where you can come out, learn to throw, and to meet the team. Practices start on September 11th. Bring a pair of soccer cleats if you have them, otherwise, tennis shoes will be fine. Also, bring a light and a dark t-shirt and a bottle of water. While we play year-round, the actual college season is in the spring. In the fall, we work on developing new players, having everyone play as much as possible, and having a good time. We will be going to our first tournament, Club Sectionals, on the weekend of September 16th in Middletown, NY in which we will play club teams from New York and Connecticut. We are also planning on going to tournaments at Yale, Williams, and UMass Amherst during the fall season. Ultimate is a competitive yet spirited sport in which seven players on each team attempt to score 15 goals by catching the Frisbee in the other team’s end zone. It is a fast-paced sport that emphasizes speed and agility. The game’s offense flows very much like soccer and the defense looks like a combination of coverage in football and marking in basketball. Skying for the disc and laying out to get a D are some of the most fulfilling parts of the game. Some of the alumni that you’ll meet at the alumni game are old enough to be your parents! NF has consistently been one of the best teams in New England, making nationals almost perennially before 1996. Since then, the team has come within one game of going to nationals several times. We pride ourselves in our rich history and our awesome teammates. We practice between 2 and 4 times a week and go to several tournaments in the fall. To kick off the spring, we spend Spring Break in scenic Savannah, GA in a house next to the beach, playing Frisbee during the day and partying at night. When we come back to school, we get serious and prepare for several more tournaments in the spring, culminating in the New England Regionals and hopefully, College Nationals. The current team is rather young but is not lacking in either talent or athleticism. Most of the returning players are sophomores, along with some very good upperclassmen. The team should be even better this year than it was last year, when we made it to regionals, taking second in our section and defeating Yale and Uconn in close games. With your help, we will hopefully be able to win the New England region and continue NF’s tradition of making it to nationals. If you think that you would like to be a part of Nietzsch Factor, visit our web site at www.wesleyan.edu/wsa/nf or contact the captain, Phil Benjamin at pbenjamin@wesleyan.edu.
