Yearbook Committee Job Descriptions
Wesleyan University

The WSA is hiring staff for 10 positions on the Yearbook Committee to help produce the Class of 2009 yearbook. We need students to fill positions in editing, designing, advertising, marketing, and photography/journalism. We’re also looking for a talented business manager. Editor

The editor is the sole correspondent with persons outside the committee, including but not limited to the WSA Office Coordinator, the yearbook production company, and the portrait studio. Strong organization skills are essential, as the editor is responsible for making sure the committee meets all deadlines. The editor will hold all staff accountable for completing their work on time and in a professional manner. This person must possess excellent decision making and leadership skills because they are responsible for the final approval of all design and content elements of the yearbook.

Assistant Editor

The assistant editor works closely with the editor-in-chief and oversees the layout of the yearbook. S/he ensures the layout follows general layout rules, makes sure pages in each section maintain theme and similarity, proofs layouts of each page before the editor does, trains staff and helps editor with other tasks as assigned.

Designer/Layout Editor

The designer should be a creative individual. The designer/layout editor is responsible for the cover design and layout of the yearbook. The designer should also be comfortable speaking to others because they will be the prime liaison between the WSA and the outside contractor, so good communication skills are a must.

Advertiser

The advertiser is the individual responsible for reminding the Wesleyan community about the yearbook throughout the school year. This includes reminding students to submit their photos and purchase a yearbook. The advertiser puts up flyers and posters around campus and sends out mass emails to remind their classmates of approaching deadlines. The advertiser must be outgoing and enthusiastic about the yearbook, as they are responsible for promoting it to the student body.

Marketing Assistant

The marketing assistant is the individual responsible for involving the outside community with the Wesleyan yearbook. The marketing assistant works hand-in-hand with area organizations in order to sell ads. This individual also works closely with the firm responsible for handling the production of the yearbook.

Photographer/Journalist

The photographer/journalist becomes involved in on-campus activities and is responsible for taking as many pictures of club events as possible and conducting interviews about the event or activities. This person should have extra time particularly on weekends and weekday evenings to photograph events. A digital camera is not required; one is provided to you. Those with a keen eye for interesting photo perspectives are especially encouraged to apply.

Business Manager

The business manager must be very organized and able to prioritize tasks. S/he is responsible for re-registering the Yearbook Committee, which is classified as a student organization, and requesting funds from SBC in conjunction with the editor. The Business Manager keeps track of all financial records and maintains a log of financial activity and funding, handling all deposits with the exclusion of payroll and book publication payments. The Business Manager orders supplies and materials as requested by editor, keeps tracks of books sales and advertising sales, and oversees the senior class list.

Copy Editor

The copy editor must be a detail-oriented person with a desire to read repetitive material. The copy editor proofs all copy of the yearbook, ensures names are spelled correctly and captions are written clearly, is responsible for editing all text and assists the assistant editor with the layout of the book.

Web Tech

The yearbook web tech should have interest and skill in Web design and site development, as well as experience working with Microsoft FrontPage 2002/2003. The web tech is responsible for uploading content to the WSA webpage as requested by yearbook advisor and editor. Interested applicants are asked to submit an example of previous design work.
