Songs

The following songs were sung at a protest at a fundraiser for Connecticut Governor John Rowland on January 31, 2002 that he dubbed "Campaign Round-Up II." We figured we'd have a little fun of our own.

I Come From the Enron Company

(To the tune of "I Come from Alabama")

I come from the Enron company,
With a checkbook on my knee.
I'm gonna buy a governor
To always vote for me.

I'll be exempt from all the laws,
Regulations and fees.
I'll even get the government
To pay my tax for me.

Oh John Rowland
Don't forget about me,
You'll always get donations,
From the Enron company!

I've Been Workin' On Campaign Reform

I've been workin' on campaign reform
All the live long day.
I've been workin' on campaign reform
To keep big money away.

Can't you hear the whistle blowin'
Each person get's one vote.
Can't you hear the people shoutin'
We're gonna rock this boat!

Rowland don't you know,
Rowland don't you know,
Rowland don't you know who you represent?
Rowland don't you know,
Rowland don't you know,
Who you represent?

Someone's in the bed with Rowland,
Someone's in the bed I know ho ho ho
Someone's in the bed with Rowland. . . . Givin' him lots of dough!

Greenbacks, nickels and dimes
Greenbacks, nickels and di hi hi himes
Greenbacks, nickels and dimes. . . . . Givin' him lots of dough!

The following song is courtesy of Democracy matters and was sung at a Democracy Matters conference at Colgate University on February 9, 2002.

The Enron Song

(Tune: Doo Ron Ron)

I bought it on a Monday, twenty bucks a share
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron
Now it's down to twenty cents, and going south from there
The Enron-ron-ron, The Enron-ron
Yeah-twenty bucks a share
Yeah-going south from there
Now all my saving's gone
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron

They used to be the big name in the power game
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron
Now they can't afford to keep their ballpark name
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron
Yeah-they owned the power game
Yeah-gave the field a name
Now they're on the welfare line
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron

I got in at a hundred billion market cap
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron
The CEO spoke and I believed his rap
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron
Yeah-a rising market cap
Yeah-I believed their rap
Now my investment is crap
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron

The Congress is in outrage and begins to yell
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron
What happened to this firm that lined our wallets so well?
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron
Yeah-they begin to yell
Yeah-it lined their wallets well
Now, that cash cow is gone
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron

They caused the blackouts all along the coast
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron
They cooked all the books before the numbers they'd post
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron
Yeah-wrecked the California coast
Yeah-cooked the numbers they'd post
Now the company's toast
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron

They're calling for reform now all across the land,
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron
But the politicians still have their heads down in the sand
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron
Yeah-all across the land
Yeah-their heads are in the sand
Now the country needs reform,
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron

Democracy means business can't control it all
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron
Those big ole' funders now are headed for a fall,
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron
Yeah-they can't control it all,
Yeah-headin' for a fall
Now everyday people gonna' have their say.
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron.

Well if you should ask me what we're gonna do
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron
Democracy Matters' comin' through for you
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron
Yeah-here's what we're doing do
Yeah-we're comin' through for you,
We're building a movement for campaign reform
The Enron-ron-ron, the Enron-ron

(repeat last verse)
