I Have a Dream
by Eric Sands

I had a dream once, or was it twice, maybe it was almost everyday since I first arrived here at Wesleyan. This dream of mine is a simple one, yet it has been met with much opposition. This dream is of a Men of Color house. It's a dream that many men of color on this campus have or will have soon. Now is the time to take this dream from it's present state in never never land to reality central.

Wait, Wait, Wait I know what you are thinking why on God's green Earth or on a much smaller venue Wesleyan University do we need a Men of Color house. There has been and always will be a need for a Men of Color house on Campus. The men of color on this campus are in dire need of immediate solidarity and a house would definitely do that. Why is it that A-men and BLB are never able to come together for regular meeting or meetings at all for that matter. The answer to that question is very simple. It's because the men of color on this campus don't know each other. We don't know each other because we haven't established a commonality that would keep us together in one common bond.

So you ask how would a house that would be designated to and for men of color achieve this goal. By having a single place where men of color can honestly and fully get to know each other we can start to break down any and all existing stereotypes that we have of each other. I am highly disappointed in myself, as a black man that I don't know any Asian men that I don't have class with and I'm sure that I am not the only man of color that feels this way. If this house was established then the men of color could come together in that house and have joint meetings as well as their separate ones. This house could be the focal or base point for any community service that we do. Young brothers from the Middletown area could come and meet with us their instead of having to go around the campus to different areas. they would see the men of color as a cohesive force instead of a scattered unit. Let's face it, leaving on all four corners of this campus does not promote much unit for anyone.

This house would be for anyone that was truly dedicated to the promotion and enhancement of men of color everywhere. It would also be for anyone that felt that they needed to be around other men of color in order to be the best man that he could be. There would be an essay and interview process for anyone who wanted to live their so that it would be as diverse as possible.

No matter how you feel about the idea of a men of color house you have to admit that their is a need for one. We men of color need to learn from one another in order to better ourselves. We need to come together to learn how to be not only just a man, not just a man of color but the best men that we can be. We need to come together so that we may learn how to treat our women as well. We need to clean up our own kitchen before we can help anyone else and a house for me of color will do that. This dream, this hope, this aspiration can become reality if we want it to. It just needs a little push.

Let's stop dreaming and motivate.
