Gender Blind/Gender Neutral Proposal to the URLC, Spring 2003.

Current Description of the Gender Blind Hall:

Gender-blind housing, located on the ground floor of Nic 6, will create an environment where student housing is not restricted to traditional limitations of the gender binary. This hall is ideal for students whose gender identification and/or gender expression varies from the standard paradigm. First-year students who express an interest in this living option will be assigned a roommate without the consideration of gender; upperclass residents may choose a roommate of any gender.

Proposed Language for Gender Neutral Assignments:

Wesleyan’s non-discrimination statement was amended in 2003 to include “gender identity and expression”. As a result of this change, and to accommodate students whose gender identification and/or gender expression varies from the standard paradigm as well as students who believe that gender should not be a consideration in making roommate assignments, Residential Life offers “gender neutral” room assignments in all first-year living units.

While first-year student assignments are usually made such that a male student receives a male roommate and a female student receives a female roommate, any student who indicates a desire for a gender neutral assignment will be assigned a roommate without regard to gender. Please note that students requesting a gender neutral assignment will only be placed with another student making the same request.
