Jose De Jesus was born in Puerto Rico and eventually moved to Manhattan, NY when he entered elementary school. Jose joined the Prep for Prep program and attend the Horace Mann School. Upon entering Wesleyan University in the fall of 1993, Jose noticed that the Latino male community was highly disorganized and invisible on campus. Most Latino males never earned their degree and dropped out at an early stage of their academic careers. Latino males never participated in Ajua Campos activities and remained distant of one another. Jose had heard of La Unidad Latina and hoped that perhaps a fraternal organization on campus geared towards Latino men might provide a solution. He spread the word to all his friends and colleagues within the community about this project, until 6 interested men stepped forth to see this dream through. Jose was one of those 6 men. Since then Jose has served as co-chair of Aju‡ Campos and taken a semester abroad in Italy.
To complete his final project for his History major, Jose
embarked upon researching the history of Latino students at Wesleyan, along the way meeting and interviewing many of our distinguished alumni. His paper proved to be the launch pad for many future events and communications between the generations of Wesleyan Latinos. He graduated in 1997 with a BA in History, and has since taught at the Concord Academy, a boarding school in Concord, Massachusetts. Jose continues to illuminate minds through his primary passion, teaching, to this day.
