Wesleyan will offer you many different groups and activities in which to participate. The concept of a Latino Fraternity is likely a new one, and not what you expected before arriving to campus. La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda is a Latino-based fraternal organization founded in 1982 at Cornell University. Unlike other Wesleyan student groups, La Unidad Latina is a life long commitment. La Fraternidad recognizes that as Latinos in institutions of higher learning we are in a privileged position. It is our obligation to contribute to our community, a task which can only be accomplished by working together.

La Unidad Latina is NOT about keg stands, being Greek, flaunting letters, stepping, strolling, proving how Latino you are, or improving your campus social standing. La Unidad Latina is an organization whose mission is to empower Latinos on several levels. The first is at the undergrad/campus level, providing each other with academic, and personal support, through community service projects, and campus events. Another facet of our organization is promoting Latino culture, whether it be throwing salsa/merengue parties or bringing Latino speakers/performers to campus. We'll admit, its not unlikely to find an Hermano partying; hey, it is college, you're supposed to have fun.

After graduation, La Fraternidad is a professional organization which sponsors community service events like Latino Voter registration drives, and most recently Hurricane George and Mitch relief efforts. La Fraternidad's alumni include doctors, lawyers, teachers, performers, writers and artists looking for every possible opportunity to work together. Current Sigma Chapter Alumnus Tom Constabile is writer for Platform - an internet hip hop magazine, Francisco Tezen does community fundraising and development for a non-profit org, Miguel Guadalupe is an Equity Specialist for Merrill Lynch, Jose De Jesus is a history teacher at Concord Academy, Jason Rosado is developing E-Commerce initiatives at Chase Manhattan and Kem Poston is a writer for the Village Voice. (Also soon to be Alums Rob Carrillo and Melvin Acevedo will be working at Banker's Trust and Prudential, respectively, and Jose Stevenson has been selected to participate in the NYC Urban Fellows Program).

The founders of Sigma Chapter chose to bring La Fraternidad to Wesleyan because they were in search of an organization that was as unique as our school. Wesleyan is far from a Greek school, yet these men felt that our campus was in need of something that could change the negative stereotypes and trends plaguing men of color at the time. The men who ultimately founded and would became apart of Sigma Chapter are men of action. In our short time at Wesleyan, we have created a strong tradition of involvement. We have had five Hermanos elected to Co-Chair of Ajua Campos. Two Hermanos have served as Student Budget Committee/Wesleyan Student Assembly Treasurer, and one Hermano as Vice President of the WSA. Three Hermanos have served as Student of Color Council Co-Chair. Four Hermanos have been selected as Admissions Senior Interviewer. Four Hermanos have been awarded the Janina Montero Prize. Also we have had two Hermanos who were Resident Advisors, and another as Captain of the Varsity Wrestling team. Oh, and lets not forget the one that plays guitar, reads socialist propaganda and..... well he can tell you the rest.
