Mission:
Organized in June of 1995, the mission of the Hartford Friends and Enemies of Wallace Stevens is to:
- Encourage awareness of this internationally renowned poet in his hometown of Hartford.
- Create programs in poetry, reading, and literacy in Stevens' name.
- Leverage Stevens' prominence in art and business for civic good in Hartford.
Long range goals:
- Help make Wallace Stevens more accessible for residents and his international following by making tangible a sense of place in Hartford as the hometown of the poet's life and work
- Offer children and adults opportunities to benefit from poetry and Wallace Stevens
- Gain community support to sustain the funding, leadership and partnerships necessary to realize our objectives.
We believe:
- Poetry gives voice and empowers people of all ages with the power of language.
- Citizens of Hartford are proud of our better-known literary heroes and should remember Wallace Stevens as well.
- Recognizing, reading and celebrating Hartford's most renowned poet will contribute to the city's urbanity.
- Stevens' example as a successful corporate lawyer and internationally-respected poet demonstrates that an ordinary man in an ordinary profession can be creative and that business and the arts can flourish together.
- Providing tangible monuments to Stevens in his hometown will provide a destination for cultural tourists and add to our city's repute.
