  • Uncovering Two Centuries of Black History on Campus: The Beman Triangle and Project-Based Learning at Wesleyan

    Time: 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Beginning in the 1820s, African Americans recently liberated from northern slavery formed a remarkable, property-owning community on what is now the western edge of Wesleyan's campus. Called the Beman Triangle today, this neighborhood served as a national center of the antislavery movement and a symbol of Black freedom.

Students in Black Middletown Lives, an African American Studies/service learning course designed and taught by Prof. Jesse Nasta, are uncovering the history of this remarkable neighborhood. Through the study of music, poetry, archaeology, and other primary documents, they are generating new knowledge of the African diaspora, right here in Middletown.

Come hear about their research and about the opportunities at Wesleyan to do original scholarship in African American history.
