Sweep of Hamilton, Behind Gavin Pittore '16 & Sam Elias '15 Pitching, Gives Baseball First-Ever 12-0 Record in NESCAC West-Team Also Beats Trinity for Record-Breaking Win

In contrasting styles, Wesleyan swept a pair of games against NESCAC West rival Hamilton, 1-0 in seven innings and 13-1 in nine innings, Sat., May 2, to become the first west divisional squad to go undefeated over the 12-game conference schedule in the 15 years the system has been in place. In the NESCAC East, Trinity accomplished the feat twice (2008 and 2009). Williams enjoyed an 11-1 conference mark in 2001, the previous best performance by a NESCAC West team. Gavin Pittore '16 (#13, pitching in main photo) was outstanding on the mound for the Cardinals in the opener, limiting the Continentals to two singles, one in each of the first two innings, then went five frames of hitless pitching. He struck out eight and walked three in posting his sixth consecutive complete game this season, upping his record to 6-2. Wesleyan got its lone run in the 2nd inning as Ben Hoynes '15 (#10, photo insert bottom), who went 3-for-3 in the contest, singled to left field with one out, advanced to second on a groundout, and scored when Nick Miceli '17 laced a double into right-center field. The pitchers controlled the game the rest of the way as Hamilton only surrendered three hits over Wesleyan's final four innings at the plate.
