Cardinals Show Improvement but Get Out-Distanced by Rest of NESCAC in Annual Qualifier - Finish 33rd at New Englands

Competing in the annual NESCAC Qualifier, this year hosted by Amherst Sat. -Sun., Sept. 29-30, the Cardinals got a strong outing from its top newcomer, Paul Andrick '16 (photo by Jon Bellonio), as he tied for 33rd in the field of 50 players with a 79-84-167 score, making him 19-over-par for 36 holes.  As a team, the Cardinals had their best 36-hole team score of 690, down from 704 at Williams and 739 at Middlebury earlier in the year. Still, Wesleyan placed 10th of the 10 NESCAC squads while Trinity took top honors and will be joined by Williams, Hamilton and Middlebury as the top four teams from the Qualifier advance to the spring NESCAC Championship.

The rest of the Cardinals lineup at NESCACs featured Sam Elias '15 with 88-80-168, Nikhil Lai '15 at 85-94-179, Angus McLean '16 scoring 97-90-187 and Ryan Marvick '14 with a 101-87-188.

The final outing of the year for the squad came up Sun., Oct. 28, when the team traveled to Brewster, Mass. for the New England Championship.  Normally a two-day affair, the New Englands were shortened to one day due to the impending bad weather induced by Hurricane Sandy.  Wesleyan shot a 351 to take 33rd of 35 teams, led by McLean with a score of 82, his best effort of the year.  He tied for 62nd among 171 competitors.  Right behind was Andrick with an 83, while Lai shot an 88 and Elias came in with a 98.

The next action for the team will come up in March, likely in Florida during the team's annual southern excursion during March break.
