Women's Lax Saves Best for Last in Rolling Past Conn, 15-7, to End Season on High Note

In the final game of the year for both squads, Wesleyan rattled off nine unanswered goals during a span of 13:34 in the first half to take a 9-1 lead over visiting Conn. College and go on for a 15-7 victory Wed., April 22. Neither team qualified for the NESCAC tournament that begins on Sat., April 25. The triumph was the 11th in the last 14 meetings for Wesleyan over Conn despite a 23-17 margin in the overall series that favors Conn. College. The Camels had tamed the Cardinals three times in the last four battles prior to today. Wesleyan got two goals and three assists from Liana Mathias '17 (#2, photo lower right) and four goals each from Abby Wheeler '17 (#3, photo upper left) and junior Martha Harding '16 (#4, photo upper right) to pace the Cardinal attack. Mathias' first goal of the game at 21:05 off a pass from the middle to the left side by Rachel Aronow '17 (#17, photo lower left), who had made an interception of a Camel pass near midfield, gave Wesleyan the lead for good, 2-1. Goals by Aronow, who had two goals and two helpers in the contest, Mathias and a natural hat trick by Wheeler in a span of just 3:47, spotted Wesleyan a 7-1 lead with 10:09 to go before halftime. Two goals from Harding finished off the Cardinals' nine-goal burst.
