Winter Break 2021

We encourage you to take time to rest, reflect, and recharge during the extended winter break. The Gordon Career Center will continue to operate virtually throughout the break period, offering career advising appointments and some limited programming over Zoom. Contact us via phone, email or live chat Monday through Friday, 9am - 4pm EST. 

If you wish to engage in career development activities during the break, here are a few ideas for how you might use your time: 

  • Enroll in our free, at-your-own-pace online course, Career Decisions: From Insight to Impact to explore how your personal identity, motivations, strengths, and goals affect your career decision making. 
  • Connect virtually with alumni and employers to learn about various industries and roles and develop professional relationships.
  • Consider short-term opportunities to gain first-hand experience, make connections, and build in-demand skills. Look for winter internships, short-term projects, and virtual volunteer opportunities
  • Plan and prepare for the spring hiring season. Many employers are eager to recruit Wesleyan students this spring for summer internships and full-time roles; leverage the tools in our digital resource library get a jump-start by creating your search strategy, researching prospective employers and institutions, and polishing your application materials and online presence, and preparing for interviews. Schedule a virtual advising appointment for individualized support.

    2021 Virtual Career and Internship Connection Fair
    Open to juniors, seniors, and alumni the Career and Internship Connection (CIC) Fair gives you the opportunity to identify and engage with companies from a wide range of industries and make connections for future interviews. Registration opens on Monday, December 14 and the fair will be held virtually on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 from 1-5pm.

    Wall Street Prep Online Self-Study Program
    Register on Handshake to access Wall Street Prep's online financial statement modeling self-study course and materials (basic package), to learn real-world financial and valuation modeling skills during winter break. The Gordon Career Center will cover the cost and provide FREE access to the program for students who register on this event page -- space is limited, first-come, first-served.

    WEShadow/Alumni Networking
    Learn about various roles and organizations, gain critical industry insight, and develop professional relationships through one-on-one and small group virtual meetings with alumni and parents working in a wide range of industries and positions. Missed the application deadline? Consider creating an independent virtual job shadow experience by connecting with alumni directly.

    Stay up to date with the latest career events and job and internship opportunities and connect with employers, alumni, and your peers on Handshake. Update your profile and career interests to triple your chances of being contacted by employers looking to hire and to receive relevant, targeted emails about upcoming events and opportunities.     Winter Internship/Internship for Credit
    A number of employers are hiring students for virtual internships this winter and these opportunities can be a great way to gain experience and develop professional skills. Search for opportunities on Handshake using the keyword, “winter.” 

    If you will be completing more than 40 working hours during the winter break period, consider enrolling in our internship course CSPL 493, to receive 0.25 academic credit. The deadline for enrollment is December 15, 2020. Questions? Email

    Note that the GCC is unable to provide funding for winter internship experiences. 

  • Resources

    Virtual Career Advising
    Meet with a career advisor over Zoom to review and refine application materials, explore and discuss career options, plan for graduate school, or prepare for your job or internship search. 

    Our team of professional career advisors are available for remote appointments through Wednesday, December 23 and will resume meeting with students and alumni virtually on January 11, 2021. 

    Career Decisions: From Insight to Impact
    The extended winter break is a fantastic opportunity for thoughtful reflection on your interests, experiences, skills, and job-market demand. Consider using this time to complete our free online course, Career Decisions: From Insight to Impact

    Watch course content and complete short exercises at your own pace to help you consider how your personal identity, motivations, and strengths affect your career decisions. Unpack the insight you gain in the course and get help navigating short- and long-term career planning in a one-on-one meeting with a career advisor on Zoom. 

    LinkedIn Learning 
    While an undergraduate student at Wesleyan, you have free, unlimited access to LinkedIn Learning via your WesPortal. While you have some time away from your academic classes during the break period, take advantage of this fantastic resource to develop business, tech, and creative skills through expert-led courses and videos. Discover, complete, and track courses related to your field and interests and showcase your new skills on your LinkedIn profile.
