Student Leadership Positions

The Office of Study Abroad has three leadership opportunities for students during and after their study abroad experiences. Through these opportunities, students may continue their global learning, support their peers, and make a lasting impact on the Wesleyan community.

    Global Correspondents

    While abroad, Global Correspondents document their study abroad experience through various storytelling formats including blogs, photos, social media takeovers, and videos. Global Correspondent Details

    Position Title

    Global Correspondent

    Work Basis

    $200 stipend, project-based

    Limited positions available

    Time Period

    Semester, with possibility of extension (if student is studying abroad for more than one semester)

    Responsibilities

    During one's term abroad:

    • Take/share photos from day-to-day experiences abroad (at least 50 total photos)
    • Host a takeover of the Office of Study Abroad Instagram account
    • Write a Wes and the World blog post (1 post; 400-1,000 words)
    • Film a short video/vlog about topic of choice (1 video; 2-6 minutes)

    • Global Correspondents who show a high level of engagement will be considered for a paid Study Abroad Ambassador position when they return to campus
    • Global Correspondents who show a high level of engagement may receive a personalized recommendation on LinkedIn

    Qualifications

    • Studying abroad at time of participation
    • Dedication to sharing your study abroad experiences with other Wesleyan students
    • Experience with blogging, photography, videography, and social media preferred
    • Reliability and accountability for overall responsibilities and timely correspondence with the Office of Study Abroad

    How to Apply

    Outgoing study abroad students will be sent the Global Correspondent application in the final weeks of the semester before they plan to study abroad.

    Study Abroad Ambassadors

    As study abroad returnees, Study Abroad Ambassadors promote international experiences and intercultural learning opportunities at Wesleyan, offer guidance to study abroad applicants and outgoing students, and support students once they return to campus. Study Abroad Ambassador Details

    Position Title

    Study Abroad Ambassador

    Work Basis

    Hourly pay, 4 hours per week

    Limited positions available

    Time Period

    Semester, with possibility of extension

    Responsibilities

    • Appear on the Office of Study Abroad website as a point of contact for students with questions or concerns 
    • Advise students during weekly office hours around campus or remotely
    • Advocate for the needs of Wesleyan students before, during, and after their study abroad experiences by bringing ideas and suggestions to the Office of Study Abroad staff
    • Assist the Office of Study Abroad in planning and executing events such as information sessions, classroom visits, pre-departure orientations, re-entry events, etc.
    • Represent the Wesleyan Office of Study Abroad at campus-wide events such as the New Student Orientation, International Education Week, WesFest, etc.
    • Create new study abroad resources and collaborate with fellow ambassadors to organize new initiatives on campus related to study abroad
    • Attend training at the beginning of semester and regular team meetings throughout the semester

    Qualifications

    • Experience studying abroad through Wesleyan for a semester, year, summer, or winter term
    • Dedication to sharing your study abroad experiences with other Wesleyan students
    • Passion to support fellow Wesleyan students as they navigate the study abroad process, from pre-departure to re-entry
    • A strong desire to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in study abroad
    • Strong leadership and teamwork skills
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (writing, public speaking, advising)
    • Reliability and accountability for overall responsibilities and timely correspondence with peers and the Office of Study Abroad

    Study Abroad Peer Mentors

    If you are a study abroad alum but you would like to work with the Office of Study Abroad on a volunteer basis, the Peer Mentor role is perfect for you. Study Abroad Peer Mentor Details

    Work Basis

    Volunteer, no minimum work hours

    Time Period

    Semester, with possibility of extension

    Responsibilities

    • Appear on the Office of Study Abroad website as a point of contact for students with questions or concerns
    • Offer guidance and support to students who contact you with questions about your study abroad experience 
    • Advocate for the needs of Wesleyan students before, during, and after their study abroad experiences by bringing ideas and suggestions to Study Abroad Ambassadors or the Office of Study Abroad staff
    • Attend training at beginning of semester 


    Optional, but encouraged: 

    • Participate in events hosted by the Office of Study Abroad during the semester. Events may include pre-departure orientation, the study abroad fair, International Education Week, WesFest, etc.
