ESCRO Committee's Role

The ESCRO committee is made up of faculty members with expertise in biology, research reviews, and ethical and legal issues in hES cell research. The committee also includes a member of the public not affiliated with Wesleyan.  The ESCRO committee reports directly to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

The committee will:

1. Provide oversight regarding issues related to the derivation and use of hES cell lines;

2. Provide scientific and ethical review of any proposed research project involving hES cells specifically to ensure that sensitive research is well justified and inappropriate research is not conducted;

3. Maintain a registry of hES cell research conducted at Wesleyan or by Wesleyan investigators;

4. Review documentation of the provenance of hES cell lines including evidence of Institutional Review Board (IRB) review and approval of the procurement process;

5. Monitor national, state, and local ethical, regulatory, and policy discussions and make recommendations to modify Wesleyan's policy as needed;

6. Educate investigators on the ethical, legal, and policy issues in hES cell research.
