Qualifications/Description:

Lab assistants will perform a range of tasks related to the digitization of physical materials and the description, presentation, and digital preservation of the resulting digital files. The primary responsibility will be to perform standard procedures for preparing, handling, and photographing rare materials as well as tracking progress. As needed lab assistants will also ingest, transform, describe and transcribe digital objects. Lab assistants are expected to be able to shift between job responsibilities fluidly, to be timely and reliable for their lab shifts, and to work in a precise, efficient, and collegial manner.

Lab assistants will gain experience in rare materials handling, 2D imaging, working in a networked computing environment, metadata, imaging software, and other tools. Lab assistants will receive on the job training and will also be offered the opportunity to participate in workshops as they occur on campus.

 

Qualifications:

  • First and second year students strongly encouraged to apply
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to spend significant time in a darkened room with photographic strobe lights in use
  • Ability to work well independently
  • Ability to lift boxes weighing up to 40 lb

Preferred:

  • Eligible for work study
  • Experience working in a lab environment
  • Experience with art handling or fragile object handling
Department Hours: M-F, 9-5 Hours/Week: 5-10
Start Date: September 15 Hourly Rate: $11.50
