Wesleyan University is excited to announce a new and affordable option for watching live TV. Partnering with Philo, we are able to bring you live TV directly to your computer and iMobile devices. Wesleyan provides free access to the local television networks using Philo’s streaming technology. Access to the additional available cable channels requires a subscription on a one or two semester basis. A single semester subscription is $95 or get both semesters for just $175, that is less than $20/month!! There is no equipment to install, no multi year contract, and no equipment to return. Subscribe to Philo via the application in the Student Life section of EPortfolio and get immediate access to live cable TV channels right on your computer, iPad, or iPhone.
Want a bigger screen than your laptop has? The cardinal technology store can provide cables needed to hook a laptop up to a large screen TV. There is also a Philo application for Roku (Roku2 XS or Roku 3 and wired internet connection required for compatibility on campus, available at the Cardinal Technology Store) for a dedicated connection to a TV. Access to the Philo cable TV system is only available from on campus Wesleyan-owned buildings.
How do I sign up for service?
In the student portfolio, click the Philo link in the Student Life section. Select one or two semester subscription. Agree to the subscription terms and your student account will be billed appropriately. Access will be granted immediately. Alternatively, you could visit the Cardinal Technology Store and sign up in person.
How do I get tech support?
The Wesleyan Student Help desk (X4000) can provide support if needed. Issues unresolved by the helpdesk can be escalated by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
Can I watch Philo on my larger screen TV?
If you have a relatively new laptop, usually just a cable is needed to connect to most flat panel TVs. You can setup your computer to watch full screen on the TV and still use your computer’s screen to do other things simultaneously. The Cardinal Technology Center can advise you on what exactly you would need.
How much does it cost?
This year we are offering the Philo service for $95 per single semester or $175 for the entire year.
Do I need to make an appointment for installation?
No! A link in your student portfolio under student life will allow you to subscribe. Your access will be granted within 24 hours. No equipment to install or return at the end of the year.
What channels are offered?
Philo's 2014 channel lineup is available here.
Why do you not offer ESPN or HBO?
If we see strong interest and numerous subscriptions, we will be able to offer HBO and ESPN in the future without raising the subscription cost substantially. Our goal is to offer a low cost subscription option for live TV.
Are there other options where I can get ESPN?
Yes. Woodframe residents may subscribe to Comcast. Dorm residents may subscribe to AT&T U-Verse. ITS is currently working on the ability for dorm residents to subscribe to Comcast. -Fall 2014
Can faculty and staff access the service?
Yes. Faculty and staff may watch over-the-air broadcast channels for free by going to wesleyan.philo.com and creating a user account. Any local broadcast channels will play. Those wishing to pay for access to cable channels can contact email@example.com.
