Choosing Majors and Careers for F-1 Visa Holders

Intended Audience: Classes of 2023 and 2024 F-1 visa holders

Session Description: In this session, you will learn important factors (personal interest, career prospect, immigration-related benefits/regulations) to consider when choosing a major as an F-1 visa holder. You will receive a list of majors that are eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT) STEM extension and other important on-campus resources for choosing a major.

Session Description: This workshop will cover: 1) OPT eligibility, 2) information about maintaining your F-1 visa status while on OPT and 3) a brief introduction to OPT STEM extension. Students who have additional questions about OPT after attending the workshop are encouraged to attend one of OISA's drop-in hours.

Session Description: In this workshop, OISA staff will provide step-by-step guidance to fill out the I-765 (Application For Employment Authorization). Students are encouraged to download the form and follow along. Students who would like to receive individual feedback on their I-765 form should email a completed copy of their I-765 to oisa@wesleyan.edu. The turnaround for receiving corrections/feedback is 7-10 business days. Students are encouraged to attend one of OISA's drop-in hours to ask questions related to filling out the I-765 form.

The goal of these meetings is to better understand what support looks like for international students.

Session Description: International upperclassmen will be sharing their advice, thoughts, and wisdom about navigating various summer experiences in the U.S. and globally. Students interested in exploring opportunities for summer internships, academic research, or summer programs can ask any questions about the application process or the actual experience and gain valuable information and insight from their peers. This session would be a great way for students to interact with people searching for similar opportunities as well as network with upperclassmen who have previous experience.

OISA Virtual End of the Semester Gathering

Intended Audience: F-1 visa holders who will be staying on campus during the winter break

Session Description: OISA is hosting an end-of-the-semester gathering for all international students who plan to stay on campus over the break. This virtual get together will help to answer any questions you have about the winter break and introduce you to the team and services that will help make this time fun, memorable and safe. This is a required session for all international students remaining on campus, whether until the end of the fall semester or for the entire winter break.
