Orientation Highlights

Here are some of the highlights of Orientation that you should look out for once you get to Wesleyan. You'll be able to check the Guidebook app for exact times and locations. More information on how to download Guidebook will be coming in August!

Class Photo and President's Remarks

There are few moments in your Wesleyan career where you'll be with everyone from your class at once. One is graduation - and the other is for this photo! Join us in the Freeman Athletic Center to document the first day of your time at Wesleyan, hear a speech from President Michael Roth, your Student Body President, and be welcomed by the members of the Orientation Planning Committee. 

Small Group Sessions

The Small Group meetings are at the heart of Orientation. Lead by an Orientation Leader, these sessions will help you acclimate to Wesleyan and discuss topics and other issues that might come up during your time at Wesleyan. 

Academic Forum

Professors and other representatives from departments and programs at Wesleyan will be available to answer your questions about major requirements and course offerings, as well as to discuss electronic Permission of Instructor and Pre-Requisite Override. AP/Placement exam course recommendations can be finalized at the forum.

We Speak, We Stand

We Speak We stand is a program modeled on a commitment to creating a campus community that is actively engaged in the prevention of sexual assault and relationship violence, and also advocates for the responsible use of alcohol. Students share their experiences around sexual violence and alcohol use through monologues and skits to help create a caring community and a safe campus environment.

First Year Matters: Kennedy Odede '12 and Jessica Posner '09 Lecture and Discussion

The purpose of Wesleyan's First Year Matters program is to provide a shared experience for the entire class as well as an introduction to intellectual life at Wesleyan. Here, you'll get to hear Kennedy Odede '12 and Jessica Posner '09 authors of this year's common read Find Me Unafraid: Love, Loss, and Hope in and African Slum, address the incoming students and talk about their book and their experiences. 

Common Moment

Common Moment is an annual Orientation event that brings new students together in movement. Students will learn a dance from around the globe, and have the opportunity to perform for their peers. Dances are simple, energetic, and fun!

Waste Not Tag Sale

Waste Not is an annual tag sale held move-in weekend that is run by Sustainability Interns and student volunteers. All items from the sale are collected in May during move-out and help you to create an awesome space! Items range in price from less than $1 to $25-50+ for furniture. Cash or check only. All proceeds keep Waste Not self-sufficient and benefit local nonprofits, environmentally-based projects, and financial aid. Make sure to get here early to get the best stuff!

Middletownopoly

Get acquainted with your new town through a DIY walking tour based on the classic board game. PASS GO and get the chance to collect up to $200 worth of prizes.

In the Company of Others

In the Company of Others is a presentation of autobiographical monologues written and presented by current students.  Students share personal stories around issues of identity.  Each year, they represent a broad range of topics and experiences -- moving and powerful, often funny, and always thought provoking.

"Sunday Serenade" - A Capella Concert

Check out Wesleyan's talented a cappella groups at what will probably be your only opportunity all year to hear so many a Capella groups in one place at the same time!

Social Events

An Evening at Usdan

Join the Usdan Center Activities Board (UCAB) for a fun, relaxing evening. Grab some Italian Ice and get to know your fellow Classmates!

Stargazing

Get closer to the stars for the first viewing session of the year. The Van Vleck Observatory will be open Wednesday nights throughout the academic year. This event will be cancelled if the weather is cloudy.

Square Dance

A Wesleyan tradition! Join other new students in a do-is-do and promenade round and round under the stars.

Karaoke & Prizes

Whether you enjoy singing on a stage or in your shower, Karaoke is the place for you! Join UCAB for a night of Karaoke and a chance to win some prizes!

Silent Disco - Olin Library

Have you ever wanted to party in a library? Well now is your chance! Join us in a silent disco party with a live DJ and amazing lights to dance your night away in the space you will soon catch yourself studying in!

Just for FUN!

Take a break and join UCAB (Usdan Center Activities Board) your OLs & Eco Facilitators for crafts and novelties! Bring your artistic spirit and decorate picture frames, dorm door labels, succulents, and your own Wes tote bags! You can also get your fortune read and stuff your very own bear! Don't forget to visit the photobooth and show off your Wes pride! 

Open Mic Night and Kettle Korn

Join us for a night of celebrating Wesleyan talent. Get up on stage and show us what you've got! What's a better way to spend a summer night than live entertainment AND KETTLE KORN!


Affinity/Religious Group Events

Vespers

Vespers is a nondenominational weekly student run ritual open to students of any or no religious or spiritual affiliation. The focus of the rituals change weekly creating an open and spontaneous space to explore ourselves and meet new friends. Join us for this peaceful gathering and the vegetarian meal that follows

Student of Color Luncheon

This session develops a community and assists with the transition to the Wesleyan environment for new students who identify with the complexities and multiple meanings of the concept of “student of color.” The reception is an opportunity to meet continuing students on campus, along with faculty, staff, and administrators. Space is limited to the first 150 students.

Jummah Prayer

Please join the Muslim community for our weekly Friday Jummah sermon and prayer. All are welcome to pray or observe.

Pride Reception

Enjoy dessert, meet members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community, and receive an introduction to the many resources designed to make your experience at Wesleyan a successful and positive one. (Note: students are free to come and go as they please, so drop by any time!)

Shabbat Services

All are invited to the Bayit for a song-filled Shabbat service. Come celebrate Shabbat and meet members of Wesleyan’s Jewish community.

Shabbat Barbeque Dinner

Enjoy a delicious catered Shabbat dinner and meet Jewish students at the Bayit. All are welcome. Requires one meal swipe.

Catholic Student Brunch

Have Brunch with campus priest Father Bill. Interact with other Catholic students on campus.

Protestant Community Meet and Greet

Take a break from the Orientation bustle and celebrate spiritual and theological diversity by joining Wesleyan students and the Protestant chaplain for coffee and dessert. Come learn about all the fun and enriching Protestant student groups, programs, and events available! All are welcome.

Muslim Student Association (MSA) Meet and Greet

Meet The Muslim Student Association where we will talk about our experiences as Muslims on campus, the MSA and the ways in which our community can grow and our voices can be heard. Bring your friends! There will be snacks!
