Lock Out/Lock Change Policy and Charges

Residential Life Lock Out Policy:

Students living in the following areas: Writer's Block (156 High Street), 200 Church Street, the Butterfields, Clark, Bennet, Nicolson, Hewitt, and West College will go to the Resident Advisor on duty for their area when locked out during the hours below. On weekdays, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., all students can retrieve loaner keys from the Office of Residential Life free of charge.  Loaner keys must be returned to the Office of Residential Life by close of the business day on which they are checked-out. Students who receive a loaner key after 3:00 p.m., may return the key after-hours to the Residential Life dropbox located between North and South College (High Street side). Public Safety will handle lockouts during the hours below. Saturday and Sunday in the above noted areas. Public Safety will handle lockouts for all other areas not mentioned above when the Office of Residential Life is closed. Please note that you will be charged $10 for lock outs each time Public Safety or an RA unlocks your door. You will also be charged for a lock change if you fail to return a temporary room key within the allotted time frame. Lock changes start at $96. Students with high financial need should contact Scott Rohde, Director of Public Safety, at srohde@wesleyan.edu to request the fee be waived.

Lock Out Charges:

All lockouts outside of the Residential Life Office business hours (Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) are subject to a $10 charge.

Residential Life Lock Change Policy:

The Office of Residential Life holds the safety of Wesleyan students as a top priority. The loss or theft of a key is considered a security risk, as anyone who finds it is then able to access student buildings and/or rooms. Therefore, for the safety of all students, a lost key will always result in a lock change. The Office of Residential Life understands that keys maybe lost in such a way where the chances of anyone finding them are slim, however, the same rule applies to all.  This policy is an objective way of maintaining the safety and security of all students on campus.

Lock Change Charges:

A lost, stolen or misplaced key to ANY residential space (including front doors to Program Houses and apartment buildings not on card access) will result in a lock change.  The cost of a lock change is $60 for materials, $24 for installation/labor and $6 per key needing to be cut according to capacity of the space and including at least one spare key for the Office of Residential Life.

**Please note that each lost key requires a lock change and that these requests cannot be canceled after submission.**
