WWII Day-Long Event: Envisioning peace—former allies jockey for influence in a postwar world

The magic was in the Marshall Plan itself… to act as architects for the new Europe.

This course is a sequel to the fall 2020 offering, featuring three texts dealing with the final year and immediate aftermath of WWII. Instructors Gillio Gallarotti, Professor of Government at Wesleyan University, Peter Rutland, Professor of Government at Wesleyan University, Robert Cassidy, Colonel, U.S. Army (Retired), and Andersen Fellow in Defense and Foreign Policy at Wesleyan University will use this single-day event to take up the myriad strategies and crises that continued to destabilize Western Europe. Conflicting agendas and power grabs did not end when the shooting stopped. The Soviet Union looked to expand its influence, even as the Western Allied governments, particularly the United States, sought to inculcate democratic norms into nations just emerging from prolonged conflict and political and economic destabilization.
