Guilford Architectural & History Tour: At a crossroads in time

Guilford Museum
A museum-quality trove of New England architecture and history in our backyard

Guilford CT is notable for having New England’s third largest collection of historic homes, outdone only by Newport, RI and Salem, MA. Encompassing 375 years of Guilford’s architecture and history, this guided walking tour will touch on outstanding examples, some of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. The tour begins at the Henry Whitfield State Museum, proceeds to the Guilford Green and nearby Fair Street, culminating at the Keeping Society headquarters, the Thomas Griswold House, for a catered garden reception and comments by Dennis Culliton, director of the Witness Stone slavery memorial project.

The class will meet in the parking lot of the Henry Whitfield House, 248 Old Whitfield St., Guilford at NOON on Friday, April 9th. With luck, given Covid relief, the house will be open for tours. The group will then carpool to the next tour location. Those wishing to stay in their vehicles can listen in on tour guide comments by cell phone. Total walking distance is 1.25 miles. Following this portion (+/-2 hours), the group will return to Whitfield and proceed to the Thomas Griswold House (Guilford Keeping Society Headquarters) for a 3:30 pm catered reception and comments by Dennis Culliton about his slavery-awareness, Guilford-based Witness Stones Project.
Events will conclude at approximately 4:30 pm.
