Wesleyan Collegium Musicum Spring Concert: Like a Dove Above the Streams

Wesleyan’s Collegium Musicum will bring wonderful works by Renaissance nuns out of history’s shadows and into the light during a spring concert under the direction of Jane Alden, Professor of Music, and Chair and Professor of Medieval Studies. The ensemble will premiere new works by the Iranian composer and Visiting Scholar in Music Arshia Rahmati (b. 1991). The Collegium Musicum will also honor the late Wesleyan composer and John Spencer Camp Professor of Music Emeritus Richard K. Winslow ’40, Hon. ’10, P ’71, GP ’23 (1918–2017), performing several of his works from editions made in consultation with composer and Visiting Professor of Music William Brooks ’65. The concert will also feature guest Ralph Samuelson MA ’71.

Music from the cloisters will include composers Raffaella (Vittoria) Aleotti (c. 1575–c. 1646) and Chiara Margarita Cozzolani (1602–c. 1677). The program will also draw on the long history of tributes written in honor of other musicians, with pieces by William Byrd (c. 1540–1623), John Jenkins (1592–1678), and William Lawes (1602–1645).

Having received a Service-Learning Initiative Grant from the Office of Community-Engaged Learning for 2024, the Collegium Musicum is engaging with neighborhood seniors over the course of the spring semester.

Concert by the Marian Consort

The Marian Consort is a nine-person professional vocal ensemble whose discography includes an album of motets by the Portuguese composer Vicente Lusitano, the first published composer of African descent. Likely born around 1522, his Liber primus epigramatum was issued in Rome in 1551. This will be the first time his music has been performed at Wesleyan. Before their concert, the Marian Consort will hold a workshop with students in Wesleyan’s Collegium Musicum.
