Studying and Understanding Course Material
Whether you're looking to develop more effective strategies for studying, need general academic support, or are seeking more individualized tutoring for a specific course, the following resources can assist you with studying and understanding course material.
Resources
Faculty Office Hours and/or TA sessions
Faculty members are available to meet with students during weekly office hours. In addition, TA sessions are linked with many courses and serve as a valuable opportunity for students to have their questions answered. Also, many faculty provide additional course material through Moodle, or another online course management system. Refer to your course syllabus, or ask your instructor, to determine when and how they are available, and what resources are available for the course.
Student Academic Resources
Whether you need to develop strategies for effective studying, gleaning information from a textbook, reading a novel for discussion, or organizing your materials after class, the staff in SAR or an Academic Peer Advisor would be happy to meet with you to assist with developing reading and study strategies for any course. Additionally, a Peer Technology Specialist can provide you with tips for using technology to understand and digest your information in new ways. STEM Zone
STEM Zone, located in the Science Library, is a space where students currently taking introductory science courses can receive academic support. Students can get help from course TAs, course instructors, peer advisors, and fellow students. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
Math Jam
Math Jam is is an additional resource for students taking introductory math classes. It is a space available for students to come on their own, or in a group, to work on homework sets, study for exams, and find new study partners. Experienced tutors are on-site, ready to answer questions and review concepts as they arise.
Deans' Peer Tutoring Program
The Deans' Peer Tutoring Program, which focuses on course content, should be used to supplement other means of support. Peer tutoring is provided free of charge; students can receive up to two hours of tutoring each week per course for which they are matched with a tutor. Students needing more intensive, individualized tutoring, should view the How to Request a Peer Tutor page, and fill out the request form.
Language Resources and Technology (LRT)
The LRT staff supports students, faculty and members of the Wesleyan community in their pursuit of language proficiency and in their study of related cultures. Many of the LRT resources are available online, and the LRT provides a lab space for students to meet, study and get help with language related assignments. Those committed to learning a foreign language are encouraged to contact the LRT and explore the many resources and support services available.
Math Workshop
The Math Workshop offers drop-in tutoring to all members of the Wesleyan community. The staff members on duty are either experienced undergraduates or math graduate students. Staff members provide a friendly, relaxed atmosphere while answering questions about mathematics.
Quantitative Analysis Center (QAC)
The QAC coordinates support for quantitative analysis across the curriculum. Tutors for statistical computing are available to assist with data management and analysis using Eviews, R, SAS, SPSS, and Stata. QAC Tutors can also assist with SQL, Excel, and data access programs like Research Insight (S&P Compustat data) and Data Insight.
Scientific Computing and Informatics Center (SCIC)
The SCIC is aimed at facilitating the effective use of Wesleyan's considerable technological resources. SCIC tutoring is available for a variety of programming languages and analytical software packages. SCIC tutors can assist with programming, Matlab, Mathematica, SQL and the computing cluster.
