Dear Wesleyan Students:

It is my pleasure to welcome each of you to the campus for the 2008- 2009 academic year. I extend an especially warm welcome to the newest members of our community, the Class of 2012 and transfer, visiting, and exchange students. Liberal learning is the cornerstone of a Wesleyan education. To that end I encourage you to engage in academic pursuits across the curriculum, to take advantage of co-curricular opportunities outside the classroom, and to participate in the many social, cultural, and athletic activities that make Wesleyan truly unique.

The Student Handbook is a guide to the many resources available to you. Section I provides information about academic advising, degree requirements, how to effectively use the Electronic Portfolio, course registration, and other academic resources. Section II includes information about health services, residential life, and other student support services. Section III contains information about the Wesleyan Student Assembly (WSA) and the Graduate Student Association (GSA). Section IV contains the principles and standards that govern our conduct and are required to maintain an environment in which all members of our community respect each other, are tolerant of different perspectives, and are able to freely express themselves. Section V provides some insight into the history of the University and some useful information about the Middletown and local communities.

I hope that each of you will achieve your goals, contribute to our community, and have lots of fun along the way.

Best wishes for a great year,

Michael Whaley

Vice President for Student Affairs
