MONDAY NIGHT LECTURE SERIES | MONSTROSITIES | FALL 2026

Alterlife and Monster Kin

M. Murphy  • University of Toronto
October 12 @ 5pm • Room 100 of The Frank Center for Public Affairs

Alterlife names a collective condition of already being materially changed by damaging environmental forces, and yet still open to alteration. It is a term that is used to consider the ways we, human and non-human, are caught up in each others conditions of living and dying. Pollutants already alter every human alive, though unevenly, but that is not the end of the story of alterlife in the aftermath. Embracing a desire-based approach to harm-reduction that also commits to the unflinching examination of structures of environmental violence, this talk will build on Indigenous and feminist science and technology studies methods for approaching the study of monstrosities.
