"No" and Other Phrases Black Womxn (Should) Use to Take Care of Ourselves

Courtney Patterson-Faye • Wesleyan University

April 10th @ 6pm • Daniel Family Commons

The body is a text through which we experience life, impacting who we are and what we do. However, the body—and its size—also dictates what we are asked to do. Gender work, and later racially gendered work, has long made Black women responsible for the care of others. In actuality, it has called on Black women to not only care for others, but to care for ourselves last. Carefully examining Black Feminist praxis of what it means to take care of oneself as a Black womxn, juxtaposed with current prevalent “self-care” practices and their public messages, Patterson-Faye ventures to interrogate how Black body size operates as a precursor as well as a determinant in how Black womxn function, thrive, and are (mis)valued at work, in their communities, and while taking care of themselves.
