Entangled Empathy: Race, Place, Space

Lori Gruen • Wesleyan University

March 27th @ 6pm • Daniel Family Commons

Entangled empathy is a process of caring perception that must overcome a tricky set of obstacles when confronting racial, locational, and species-based differences.  In this talk, which will focus on whether and how entangled empathy works in the context of prisons (for those in them and for those outside them engaged with incarcerated individuals) and zoos (for the visitors gazing at the captives), I will explore some of the obstacles, as well as the dangers of human/animal comparisons. What limits our capacities to meaningfully engage with very different captive others and what sort of care is needed to overcome these limits?
