Cal Flyn is the author of nonfiction books including Islands of Abandonment (2021) and The Savage Landscape (forthcoming, 2026). Her accolades include the John Burroughs Medal for writing on natural history and the E.M. Forster Award from the American Academy of Arts & Letters. Islands of Abandonment was a Sunday Times bestseller and has been translated into 14 languages. Cal has been a fellow at Yaddo and Macdowell, and a writer-in-residence at Gladstone's Library (Wales) and the Jan Michalski Foundation (Switzerland). Her journalistic writing has appeared in publications including Granta, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian and National Geographic.
