Majestic Repose: Classical Antiquity and Renaissance Sculpture at Connecticut's Slater Memorial Museum

Completing the course on Renaissance sculpture, with a site visit to Norwich’s Slater Museum.

The study of ancient Greek, Roman, and Renaissance sculpture is foundational to our understanding of most, if not all, of Western European art. Well-known sculptures from these periods serve as timeless records of the lives and conflicts of ancient gods, as models for understanding cultural norms of the day, and as historical markers in the evolution of Western civilization. This course, the conclusion to the spring course that was canceled due to the pandemic, includes a field trip to the Slater Museum’s sculpture collection.
