Writing Flash Nonfiction: The Micro First-Person Essay

Flash nonfiction is a current term for a very old literary form: the brief first-person essay. In this course we will read flash essays for inspiration, then use some unconventional means—making lists, for example—to find our way to stories we didn’t know we had in us. This is not a writing workshop in the traditional sense, but those who want to share their work will have plenty of chances to do so. No writing experience or prerequisites of any kind are needed—just the desire to write. Required (easy-to-find) text: The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Writing Flash Nonfiction, ed. Dinty Moore. Supplemental readings will be photocopied.
