This class proposes that through a precise and detailed explanation of the methodologies of jazz and improvised music students can gain an ability to understand, control, and employ a logical and practical way of using improvisation in areas that interest them. While many see improvisation as a magical mystery beyond our control, this class will clarify that improvisation is action. Action occurs within a structure, and structure can be identified, labeled, and used again.  

The structure of this class will include instructor presentation, discussion, and workshop. The instructor’s book, Perpetual Frontier: The Properties of Free Music, and a few photocopied or pdf texts will be offered for reading. Students will be invited to write answers to a questionnaire meant to highlight ways in which they might already use improvisation. A suggested music list in the form of audio files will be shared with students. Students may choose to prepare a final presentation delivered in the format of their choice.   

Ideas for projects will be given after each class. Students are not expected to do them or to submit any work. However, time will be given to students who choose to do so.
