Favorite Middletown restaurant: Puerto Vallarta is a long-time fave, but since Sultan’s Kebab Express opened up last spring it has quickly become a contender. For a city of Middletown’s size the range of terrific and authentic ethnic food is outstanding.
Why Wesleyan? Few colleges afford the opportunity to take advantage of the breadth and depth of our academic programs in such a dynamically diverse community that promotes collaboration over competition. I was drawn to Wes as a student because it is exceptionally balanced in terms of size, location, educational philosophy, co-curricular opportunities, and more. The students are intellectually curious, socially and politically active, and invested in making positive impacts on the world regardless of what occupations they ultimately pursue.
One piece of advice you’d give to all applicants: Remember that the college application process does not reward either the modest or the arrogant. Be your own best advocate and trust that it matters far less where you ultimately enroll than what you do while you are there. Your college outcomes are not accurate measures of either your self-worth or potential. Do your part and let the rest take care of itself.

Why Wesleyan? The open curriculum, advising system, and one-on-one engagement with the faculty will introduce you to new ideas and perspectives, push you outside of your academic comfort zone, and allow you to grow as an engaged scholar and socially conscious community member.
One piece of advice you’d give to all applicants: Applying to college is a process; your education leading up to this point should not. In fact, your years leading up should be punctuated by curiosity, creativity, and challenge; a comfort in taking academic risks and the important lessons learned from mistakes; stretching personally; valuing authenticity; and investing in your personal relationships and community. High school should not be seen as a stepping stone to college; rather, as a highly formative opportunity to fully develop as a caring and contributing human being.

Why Wesleyan? Wesleyan immediately struck me as an environment that values students' creativity, knowledge, and uniqueness. Additionally, each student I've talked to has raved about special housing options that are available and the seemingly endless opportunities to get involved with the Middletown community.
One piece of advice you’d give to all applicants: Reach out to current students and be open to hearing about their experiences- both the good and the bad. This is an incredibly helpful way to learn about a specific school because those students might end up being your classmates, teammates, and friends!

Favorite Book: I read constantly, so this is an impossible choice. The Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo will forever have a special place in my heart, but some of my more recent favorites have been Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt, True Biz by Sara Nović (which was a super cool audiobook experience), and In The Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado.
Favorite Middletown Restaurant: I'm new here and still exploring the area, but if you're a breakfast fiend like me, you can't go wrong with Neil's Donuts. My other recommendation is Middletown-adjacent, but holy cow (pun intended), Rich Farm ice cream is among the best I've ever had.
Why Wesleyan: Wesleyan's tight-knit, liberal arts community allows students and staff alike to grow and develop as individuals, but with the support of a greater collective every step of the way. Wes is also strongly committed to the arts! There's this vibrant spirit of creativity that underscores everything (even in places you might not expect).
Advice to applicants: When you think your personal statement is finished, ask an acquaintance to look it over. Ask what their main takeaways are, and if they found anything confusing. As important as it is to seek the opinions of your most trusted friends, family, and mentors, they know you well enough to fill in any contextual gaps that you might have overlooked. When we read your application, we don't have the privilege of knowing you very well (yet). If your main idea, jokes, and stories shine through your essay clearly enough that an acquaintance "gets" it, you're in great shape.

One piece of advice you’d give to all applicants: Take time to be thoughtful about your essay! Remember, it should be personal, specific, and authentic to you; don’t worry too much about what you think an admissions officer will want to hear.

Favorite book: I tend to fluctuate between fiction and non-fiction but recently read, Countdown 1945: The Extraordinary Story of the Atomic Bomb and the 116 Days that changed the world. I found most compelling the parts of the book that illuminate the lives of everyday American and Japanese citizens in the wake of such a terrible event.
Favorite Middletown restaurant: La Casa Mania has delicious Mexican street food with sizeable portions and solid prices – definitely recommend!
Why Wesleyan? I very much appreciate the way that both Wesleyan students and faculty – while it seems to come naturally, I’m sure that there is a level of intentionality to it – try to work at and understand intersections. I’m not talking about 4-way-stops (though it’s important to understand how those operate), I’m talking about how different people, groups, and areas of study come together, interact, and exist concurrently.
One piece of advice you’d give to all applicants: I recommend approaching the college search process with an open mind. It’s good to have target schools and identify places of interest/fit, but I firmly believe that students can and will be successful wherever they end up.

In terms of reading, I’ve been enjoying a reread of The Alchemist and am planning to dive into a new mystery novel soon. When it comes to movies, I’m always up for watching I Am Legend, any of the Batman films, and the John Wick series.

Why Wesleyan?: As an alum, I chose Wesleyan for its intellectual freedom, vibrant community, and commitment to progressive values. It challenged me to think deeply, explore widely, and grow in ways I never expected—and it continues to shape who I am today.
One piece of advice you’d give to all applicants: Be authentic. Don’t try to fit a mold or say what you think others want to hear—tell your real story, what genuinely excites you, and why it matters. Admissions committees want to get to know you, not just your accomplishments. Be honest about what drives you, what challenges you’ve faced, and what you hope to contribute. That authenticity will always resonate more than a polished but impersonal response.

One piece of advice you’d give to all applicants: Abandon the notion of a “perfect fit” or a “dream school.” Keep an open mind and realize there are so many colleges and universities out there, and they can all serve you well. Your college experience, wherever it may be, will largely be determined by how you personally engage your faculty, staff, and classmates, and leverage the resources that exist on that campus to make the most of your time there.

Why Wesleyan? Wesleyan equips students with the practical idealism to engage and elevate with the world. I value how the community holds both intellectual rigor and love of fun in a sustainable way that sets you up for a balanced life. Wesleyan instills that being smart is never enough if you are not also kind, open and connected. As a staff member it is a joy to be a part of a community that is consistently looking for ways to connect communities, people, and ideas.
One piece of advice you’d give to all applicants: Look beyond the rankings and think about the types of communities you want to be a part of. What kind of people do you want to be roommates with? What kind of alum community do you want to enter? Staff and faculty can come and go from institutions, but the ethos and structures that a school has in place to support a well-rounded community are typically consistent. And just as much as you want to know a school beyond its rankings, we want to know you beyond your test scores and GPA! Throughout the process, hold close the people in your life who make you feel like your best self so that you can preserve your humanity.

Why Wesleyan? Wesleyan has an incredibly unique approach to learning through its open and flexible curriculum. While I did not attend Wesleyan as an undergraduate, I did attend a small national university with a strong focus on the Liberal Arts. A Liberal Arts education at Wesleyan teaches students how to ask questions, question one’s own ideas and perspectives, take risks, and to engage in the world around them.
One piece of advice you’d give to all applicants: Ignore the rankings. Search for ideal college fits, schools where you can grow and thrive academically, socially, and professionally over the next four years.

Why Wesleyan? I am a graduate of a small liberal arts college and when I entered the admission profession after graduate school, I wanted to represent an institution that embodied the values that were so central to my own college experience and life beyond. Wesleyan’s commitment to access, equity, and inclusion work, as well as deep pedagogical commitment to the liberal arts educational experience, made it a great fit for me and my personal values. As to why I stay at Wesleyan? I am consistently impressed by the commitment to making change among our students, and way Wesleyan as an institution uses its resources to support that work.
One piece of advice you’d give to all applicants: Your time in college should be a transformative experience, not simply a credentialing one. Find a school that makes you at least a little uncomfortable, but where you can see evidence that it facilitates growth and change in its students, and sets them up to find meaningful work in the world after they graduate.

We want to get the best possible understanding of who you are, what matters to you, and why. Put time and thought into your application, but once your apps are submitted, trust that life will work out as it should, regardless of which campus you end up on.

Why Wes: Even though I wasn't able to go on a proper tour of Wesleyan, the community here really stood out to me. So many Wes students made time to talk to me over Zoom and in person when I briefly visited Middletown, and through those interactions, I was shown the generosity and kindness that runs so deeply through the Wes campus and community. I ended up choosing Wesleyan because I wanted to live and learn in a supportive and welcoming atmosphere, which Wes has absolutely provided me.
Favorite Class, and Why? Architecture II is a design-build studio class where I and 15 other students were given one semester to plan, model, and construct a 500-square-foot custom storage barn for Wesleyan's student-run produce farm. Getting to practice skills from 3D modeling and model construction to pouring concrete and hand-carving 400-lb wooden timbers to support a roof structure provided me with so much hands-on experience that I'm very grateful for.

Why Wes: During my college process, I was mostly looking at small liberal arts schools in New England. A lot of places blended together, but the little details of Wesleyan made it stand out. I love the progressive housing model and how it promotes independence while fostering a strong, tight-knit community. I love the open curriculum and how it has let me explore my many interests across disciplines. The detail that really caught my attention was the tour guide talking about Millers Pond. She told us stories of going with her friends when the weather got nice in the spring, going after classes on a random Tuesday, and even going in the dead of winter just for fun. The stories of her adventures and the smile on her face as she told them are what ultimately sealed the deal for me.
Favorite Class, and Why? My favorite class thus far has been Fire Ecology and Management. We learned about fire behavior and what natural and man-made factors influence it. We modeled real fire data from past fire events and even got to go on several field trips to learn about prescribed burning. It was super cool to learn about something so niche yet so relevant to the current climate crisis.

Why Wes? When I was applying to college, I knew I wanted to pursue both biology and art. Wesleyan’s open curriculum not only made it possible for me to major in both fields, but also encouraged it—fostering an environment where students are inspired to explore a wide range of disciplines. As someone who thrives on encouragement rather than high-pressure environments, I’ve come to appreciate the collaborative and supportive atmosphere in every class I’ve taken at Wes. I’ve also seen how deeply passionate students are about both their academic and non-academic pursuits. Since arriving, I’ve joined clubs I’d never heard of before and found space to explore new interests while deepening existing ones. From learning how to farm to leading Bible studies, Wes has been a place where I can grow in many directions—academically, creatively, and spiritually.
Favorite class, and why? One of my favorite classes at Wesleyan was God and Guns: The History of Firearms in America. As someone focused on art and science, I initially felt like a fish out of water in a history. While a religion course was outside of my majors of interest, the class turned out to be incredibly eye-opening. We explored how early American colonists’ relationships with firearms have shaped today’s gun culture, and how religious and political beliefs have influenced that evolution. By the end of the semester, I was writing 20-page research papers on a subject I never expected to be so compelling.

Why Wes: I chose Wesleyan because of the open curriculum. I did the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program in high school, where there was not a lot of academic flexibility, so I really loved the open curriculum and how it allows me to use my time on only the things I'm interested in. I also didn't get to tour the campus in person, so I asked a lot of questions online and attended the virtual tour. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming, and that also played a role in my committing to the school.
Favorite Class and Why? Sight and Sound Workshop, with film production in 16mm film. It was so fun! I got to build a set in our soundstage, learn how to use different types of light, and shoot and edit on real film. It helped me grow so much as a filmmaker and allowed me to explore more ways to create art. I appreciate that Wesleyan is still teaching students to shoot on film with Bolex cameras and edit on Steenbeck machines. It is rare in the country already. The old-school methods of filmmaking give me a chance to refine my storytelling skills while exploring new things.

Why Wes? When I was looking for schools, I wanted to go somewhere where I could focus on my passion for theater while studying political theory. I knew I wanted to go to law school, but I did not want to give up my artistic and creative side. Furthermore, I wanted both aspects of my learning to be taken seriously as academic disciplines. When I visited Wesleyan, I found such a large presence of theater and the arts on campus, as well as a strong sense of academia. In my first few weeks, I realized that my desire to learn across multiple disciplines was not supported by the school alone; it was also the desire of all the students here. I have friends majoring in chemistry and dance, pre-med and astronomy, and who are leading research labs and acting in student theater in their free time. I did not end up majoring in government. I chose the College of Letters, which allows me to explore literature, history, and philosophy, building for me a strong foundation of how ideas developed in our world through an interdisciplinary lens. Wesleyan is a place where intersecting disciplines and pursing all your passions is the norm. I am so grateful to go somewhere where the campus is alive with the joy of so many people studying what they love.
Favorite class, and why? My favorite class I have ever taken was American Constitutional Law with Professor Alyx Mark. The class was an incredible introduction into a law-school-style environment and taught critical case history for multiple aspects of our government functions, such as interstate commerce and hiring and firing powers. My writing became much clearer and more articulate, and it prepared me for briefing cases in law school.

Why Wes: I feel that most Wes students have a genuine love for learning. Here, I find that students aren’t just looking to scrape by in their classes to get a good grade—rather, they want to dig deeply into the material, to ask hard questions, and to make mistakes and to learn in a way that feels genuine. I can’t ever take a class in every single department at Wes, but I can have friends who have wildly different curricula than I, and we can talk about our classes and the things we are learning over lunch or a bike ride or even whispers between sets as we watch a friend do stand-up comedy. I am so appreciative of all the things I can do outside of the classroom at Wesleyan—moments that bring me academic and social and emotional growth in ways I can’t even begin to explain. Wesleyan is this sort of magical place where one can be all of these things—a committed student who loves inquiring about science, a talented writer, a genuine friend, a planner, a doer, and much, much more.
Favorite Class, and Why? Drawing I. To put it simply, this class literally changed the way that I see the world around me.

Why Wes: In addition to learning about its lively campus culture and endless opportunities for academic and career growth, I chose Wesleyan because of how it grants its students plenty of breathing room to find what they’re most passionate about, largely due to Wesleyan's open curriculum. Despite arriving on campus undecided in terms of my major, I felt more than reassured choosing Wesleyan, knowing that I would be able to explore various fields of academia based on curiosity instead of requirements. Furthermore, the student culture at Wesleyan is truly something to behold. Each student I’ve gotten the pleasure of knowing in small and big ways is incredibly driven and caring about their work and also quick to support their fellow peers no matter their major, background, etc. Overall, Wesleyan allows students like and unlike me to embrace their individuality, strengthen their intellect, and discover more about themselves every day. Simply put, there’s truly no other place like Wesleyan.
Favorite Class, and Why? My favorite class was The Narratives of Illness and Recovery taught by Professor Barber. In this course, I was able to broaden my knowledge on the topic of mental health in America, while sharpening my writing and research skills with students majoring across various academic fields.

Why Wes: When I was choosing where to go to college, I was undecided on a major and unsure of what I was looking for in a school. But during my tour of Wesleyan, I realized I really liked the "vibes" of the school, and I spent a lot of time chatting with my tour guide between all the stops, which was something I hadn't done on any other tours. I also sat in on classes and talked to members of the cross country team, which showed me the unique academic environment and culture of Wesleyan directly from students. The classes were clearly rigorous, but people seemed to have a chill and collaborative approach to tackling academics, which is aligned with my ideal classroom environment. Additionally, since I was undecided, I found Wesleyan's open curriculum would be a good fit for me, because it allowed me to have more freedom and flexibility in my studies. And I also really liked the balance between academics and athletics here at Wes.
Favorite Class, and Why? It is difficult to choose a favorite class because there have been so many I have enjoyed, but if I had to choose only one I would go with Intro to Detective Fiction. This class ended up being one of my favorites because of how interesting the course plan was and how energetic and lovely Professor Eckert was! The reading list had some really great novels and short stories that were really fun to discuss in class, and we took a day to look at some serializations of detective fiction novels in old newspaper issues at Wesleyan’s Special Collections, which was really cool. We got the opportunity to use materials from Special Collections in one of our projects as well!
Activities and Interests on/off Campus: On campus I enjoy being a part of the cross country and track and field teams, as well as WesEdge, the club figure skating team. Outside of my on-campus activities I also enjoy dance, art, and being outdoors!

Why Wes: My Wesleyan story is very different. I am a QuestBridge Scholar, which means I am here on a full-ride scholarship through the QuestBridge Match process. I often joke that Wesleyan chose me. At first, I was intimidated by being in a completely different educational environment than the one I was used to. But ultimately, Wesleyan provided me with an environment where I could not only survive but also thrive in a space that I did not think was made for me. Additionally, being able to find support on this campus through my friends is something for which I am incredibly grateful.
Favorite Class, and Why? Human Rights Advocacy: Critical Assessment and Practical Engagement in Global Social Justice. This class taught me the importance of advocacy work and how a small change can be reflected into a bigger impact. Taking this class made me realize I wanted to do advocacy work for the rest of my life.

Why Wes: I chose Wesleyan because it never asked me to compromise between a close-knit community, supportive alumni network, and access to research. Coming from India, I did not want to continue my education anonymously sitting in lecture halls. I wanted professors who would actually know my name and invite me into their research. And that's exactly what I found at Wes, whether it's working alongside faculty who genuinely want my input or being part of a student community where everyone is diving into their own thing, which could be research, poetry, dance, or canvassing for local elections. Wesleyan is a place where my professors and peers challenge and support me, and where alumni have genuinely invested their time to guide me in landing opportunities.
Favorite Class, and Why? One of the things I love about my time at Wesleyan is the focus on research, whether that be critically thinking and dissecting papers in class or actually doing hands-on research through joining a lab. My Developmental Economics class is a great example. Instead of working through a textbook, we spent the semester reading and picking apart foundational research papers that shaped the field. At the same time, I was also doing research in the Cognitive Development Lab, and Wesleyan's open curriculum allowed me to explore both interests at the same time. I found myself bringing what I had learned from my psychology research into how I was thinking about the experiments we were discussing in class. Being able to connect ideas and themes between classes is something that I have really enjoyed and appreciated, and the open curriculum and interdisciplinary thinking at Wesleyan really supports that.

Why Wes: In high school, I applied to nearly 40 colleges and universities—mostly for their engineering or economics programs. Wesleyan stood out as the only liberal arts school, and I ultimately chose it because I realized education here is about more than acquiring a credential or technical skill. Wesleyan challenges you to know yourself well, and once you do, you can take many different routes to get where you want to go. I’ve loved that flexibility—whether it’s diving into economics and data, working on a start-up incubator project, or exploring democracy through ancient Greek texts.
Favorite Class, and Why? My favorite class so far has been Democracy and Its Discontents. I loved how the course explored democracy through a Greek lens, asking fundamental questions about power, citizenship, and belonging. It challenged me to think more critically about how democratic institutions are defined and how those definitions impact who gets to participate in society. That mix of history, philosophy, and political analysis gave me a new framework for thinking about issues I care about, like governance and equity.
Activities and Interests on/off Campus: I’m a teaching apprentice in the Economics Department, where I run review sessions and office hours, and I also work as a dean’s peer tutor, helping other students strengthen their academic skills. Beyond academics, I’m on the board of the South Asian Society (Shakti), and I stay involved in campus life through admissions tours and student panels. I founded JustThrive, a nonprofit that supports underprivileged and disabled athletes in India by providing funding, equipment, and training opportunities. I’m also deeply interested in technology, real estate, and investing. I’ve worked on building AI models to streamline financial workflows in real estate and enjoy researching how innovation can transform industries. These interests let me balance my passion for social impact with my drive to explore business and technology.
