DanceMasters Weekend: Master Class - Roxane D'Orleans Juste

Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 3:30pm
Cross Street Dance Studio

$19 per class, $13 for Wesleyan students

Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 3:30pm to 5pm

Roxane D'Orleans Juste, Associate Artistic Director of Limón Dance Company, will teach a Master Class that will provide an opportunity for intermediate to advanced dance students and dance professionals to explore diverse dance techniques during DanceMasters Weekend.

Experience the expressive and exhilarating freedom of movement based in the Humphrey Limón technique. This class will offer a technically vigorous but soundly integrated approach to the exploration of movement principles based on fall and recovery; the use of breath, weight, breath rhythm, and the expressive immediacy of challenging gravity. Musicality, dancing as a community, and inspiration will be at the heart of this dance experience. A unique opportunity to enjoy and delve into Jose Limón's most beautiful repertory dance excerpts

Roxane D’Orleans Juste is a native of Montreal and of Haitian origins. She graduated from Toronto’s National Ballet School Teacher training program, pursued her classical ballet training in Europe, and moved to New York to begin her professional performing career.
In New York, Ms. D’Orleans Juste joined the Eleo Pomare Dance Company in 1981, performed and toured with Annabelle Gamson Dance Solos, and with the Limón Dance company since 1983.

With the continued support of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Foundation for the creation in fine arts, Ms. Juste has founded “en Solo,” a platform for her own choreography and specially commissioned works by internationally renowned choreographers. “En Solo” concerts have been presented in Canada, Germany, the United States, and in South America. Ms. Juste was named choreographer in residence for the company Coreoarte in Caracas, Venezuela, and has served as co-chair of the board since 2014.

An active master class teacher, she stages and directs the dances of Jose Limón for companies and ensembles around the world, as well as directs the Limón Teachers Programs this year at the Palucca School in Dresden, Germany, and in its third year in Montreal. For the Limón Foundation she has instituted LINKS and Limon 4Kids, two free of cost programs dedicated to bring dance to young students from the public school system. She was named Artistic Associate Director for the Limón Company in 2007.

Ms. D’Orleans Juste’s performances were mentioned by Robert Johnson of the Starledger on his list of “Best of 2006 Dance.” She was a Bessie Award-winner in the performer category for Sustained Achievement for her “majestic presence, infectious lightness and joyousness, and emotional depth in works by Jose Limón, Donald Mckayle, Susanne Linke, and others.” Ms. Juste is a guest teacher for the Tanz Wuppertal/Pina Baush Dance Company in Europe and in New York, and for the Essen University for the Arts.

She is honored to join the dance faculty at Marymount College and to return to share her love for dance as part of the DanceMasters Weekend at Wesleyan.
