Trumpeter and composer Wadada Leo Smith presents the first in a series of lectures looking at music and its emotional functions.

Mr. Smith is widely known for his innovative approach to music composition, scoring, and symbolism. His theoretical writings provoke both metaphysical and practical aspects of love and unity through the application of music and creativity. His systemic music language "Ankhrasmation" is significant in his development as an artist and educator. Mr. Smith is Professor Emeritus of The Herb Alpert School of Music at California Institute of the Arts, a 2014 Pulitzer Prize finalist in Music, a Doris Duke and Chamber Music America awardee, was named the 2016 "Trumpeter of the Year" by the Jazz Journalists Association of America, and is featured on the cover of Downbeat magazine's November 2016 issue.
