Sound/Material is a concert of three pieces focused on the physicality of sound. In "flame (with fan)," the flickering of flame is rendered audible with audio feedback. During "Spark Line, with acceleration," twelve kilovolt sparks are recorded and played back at a steadily increasing rate to fully expose the room acoustics they articulate. And for "Queen of the South," composed by John Spencer Camp Professor of Music Emeritus Alvin Lucier, sounds are applied to a large metal plate upon which sand is scattered, creating patterns that reflect the acoustic structure of the plate.
