Top Girls (1982) follows the promotion of Marlene, a second wave capitalistic feminist, who decides to celebrate with a group of women across history and art. After her dinner party, the audience follows Marlene back to her reality, and sees how capitalism and the patriarchy have molded her to be cut-throat, selfish, and display toxic male traits. She goes on to teach other women to be just like her. Top Girls is about how ambition can be toxic, and success always comes with sacrifice. Marlene sacrifices her family, her empathy, and her own biological daughter to get on top, leaving the audience to wonder, do empowered women really empower women?

Trigger warnings: discussion of suicide, mental health, femicide, death, and blood.
