Indonesia in Musical Voyage

Thursday, April 17, 2025 at 7:00pm
Memorial Chapel, 221 High Street, Middletown, Connecticut

Free and open to the public.

Indonesia is renowned for its diverse musical traditions, which have developed over centuries. The evening will feature a lecture and performance—inspired by an ancient heart-shaped lute depicted in the reliefs of the ninth-century Buddhist monument Borobudur—by ethnomusicologist/composer Andy McGraw PhD ’05 and Indonesian composer/singer Peni Candra Rini. John Spencer Camp Professor of Music Neely Bruce will play “A Fugue for Maeny,” and The Atalanta Quartet—featuring Pauline Kim, Conrad Harris, Chamber Music Ensemble Director John Biatowas, and Alex Waterman—will present the premiere of “A String Quartet for Sumarsam” (for Winslow-Kaplan Professor of Music Sumarsam MA ’76), compositions inspired by Bruce's personal connection to the Indonesian.
