Assistant Professor of Music and composer Darius Jones presents the New England premiere performance of his Samesoul Maker, featuring two female-identifying voices and two male-identifying voices, bells, and vibraphone. The work premiered at Roulette in New York in 2023, and is a companion piece to Jones’ 2014 composition The Oversoul Manual. The Wesleyan performance will feature Gelsey Bell, Aviva Jaye, Sunder Ganglani, and Paul Pinto on voices and bells, and Levy Lorenzo on vibraphone.
The Oversoul Manual took audiences into the alien birthing ritual of the mothers of a planet called Or’gen, while Samesoul Maker shows the daily meditation that is performed by the fathers and community while the mothers are away from home. This alien meditation creates a world of sound, syntax, and speech patterns that are different from ours, expressing the hope and truth that real communication lies beyond the realm of words and the familiar. Samesoul Maker takes the audience further into Jones’ mythological world of alien birthing rituals to reveal how this family bonds together to create the savior of their universe.
