IN THE GALLERIES: The Imperial Ghost in the Neoliberal Machine (Figuring the CIA)
The Central Intelligence Agency's efforts to purge sites of communism was a global operation—and East Asia was no exception. Key officials from the agency described acts of espionage and strategic coordination in the 1950s and '60s that ranged from the mobilization of controlled media and mafia groups to the violent suppression of socialist movements. With its title alluding to mind-body dualism, this exhibition contends with past machinations that are still corporeally present, albeit camouflaged in other forms of manipulation and continuing to shift control and coerce power under new terms. This exhibition is guest curated by the Tokyo-based project space Asakusa.

IN THE GALLERIES: Into the Image
What lies behind the miniature’s mysterious power to draw us in? Anyone who has gazed at a book illustration or spent hours enthralled by a smartphone screen understands the pleasure of absorption that beholding small things can provide. Collectability, demonstration of artistic virtuosity, and intimacy between spectator and object all imbue the miniature with certain charms. Indeed, across historical moments, artists exploited these potentialities of the miniature to captivate their audiences. This exhibition of miniature artworks—drawn entirely from the Davison Art Center collection—features objects made across several centuries, and includes examples by Rembrandt van Rijn and Henri Matisse.

IN THE GALLERIES: Brendan Fernandes: Inaction
Inaction is a new sculptural and performance-based installation by Brendan Fernandes. The exhibition consists of sculptural elements, platforms, a large carpet, and a single channel video projection, Free Fall. Working in collaboration with the architecture and design firm Norman Kelley, he designed mobile dance supports and platforms for activation by the audience and dancers. In public performances throughout the exhibition, his choreography guides dancers to interact with the minimalist, sculptural installations giving them agency to rearrange the sculptures–allowing new spaces in which to create movements.

WESEMINAR From the Corner of the Oval

The Wesleyan R.J. Julia bookstore is delighted to welcome Beck Dorey-Stein ’08. In 2012, Beck was just scraping by in DC when a posting on Craigslist landed her, improbably, in the Oval Office as one of Barack Obama's stenographers. The ultimate DC outsider, she joined the elite team who accompanied the president wherever he went, recorder and mic in hand. On whirlwind trips across time zones, Beck forged friendships with a tight group of fellow travelers--young men and women who, like her, left their real lives behind to hop aboard Air Force One in service of the president. But as she learned the ropes of protocol, Beck became romantically entangled with a consummate DC insider, and suddenly, the political became all too personal. Set against the backdrop of a White House full of glamour, drama, and intrigue, this is the story of a young woman making unlikely friendships, getting her heart broken, learning what truly matters, and discovering her voice in the process.
Presenter: Beck Dorey-Stein ’08 is the author of the New York Times bestseller, From the Corner of the Oval. A proud Wesleyan alum, Beck majored in English Literature, co-captained the women's lacrosse team, served as a senior interviewer in the Admissions Office and dominated the waffle-maker in Usdan before graduating in 2008. She taught high school English in New Jersey, South Korea and Washington, D.C. before landing a job in the Obama White House via Craigslist and, six years later, publishing her memoir about the experience. She now splits her time between Philadelphia and Cape May, and is working on a second book.
