Dear Parents of Students in the Class of 2027,
It is hard to believe that your students will soon be seniors! Time has truly flown, as I remember welcoming them to campus for the first time not so long ago and now they’re beginning to plan their senior year. Your students should now be considering whether they’ll pursue a senior thesis, determining where they stand in relation to the degree requirements and even starting to think about their lives after Wesleyan.
Your students are also now mapping out their courses for next fall as pre-registration has begun. Please urge them to consider their goals for next year now, as this will help guide them as they make these choices. As always, they should be seeking out their advisors as they make their course selections, particularly in relation to their major requirements.
The deadline to change the grading mode of any eligible courses is April 22. The deadline to withdraw from fourth-quarter or full-semester courses is on April 29, so this is a particularly good time for students to begin talking with their instructors, advisors and me if they’re considering making a change to their schedule. A “W” is a neutral mark and withdrawing from one course often helps students perform far better in their remaining courses.
Classes end on May 6, with reading period running from May 7 to May 11. Final exams will take place from May 12 to 15. Since time management issues often emerge in full force during this period, you may want to ask your student how they are planning ahead for those final projects, papers, and exams so that they’re thinking about how to manage everything strategically. Housing closes on May 16.
Hopefully your student’s summer plans are shaping up, if they’re not already in place. Please encourage them to visit the Gordon Career Center if they’re still searching. I hope this summer will also include an opportunity for your family to spend time with your rising senior, discussing their experiences at Wesleyan as well as their hopes and plans for this next year and beyond. Self-reflection is such a critical element of growth. By listening to what your student has experienced and learned, I am sure that you will see the ways that your student has grown throughout their Wesleyan experience.
It has been my pleasure to work with your student and I am looking forward to guiding them through their senior year. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Wood
