A Conversation between Laurence M. Mark ’71 and Professor Emerita Jeanine Basinger: “Wesleyan, Film and Hollywood”

All are welcome to join a conversation with Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus Laurence M. Mark ’71 and Jeanine Basinger, Corwin-Fuller Professor of Film Studies, Emerita. Mr. Mark is an Academy Award-nominated, Emmy-nominated, Golden Globe-winning producer of such acclaimed hit films as THE GREATEST SHOWMAN and JERRY MAGUIRE. Topics will include the history and development of the film department and its impact on Hollywood and beyond, and Mr. Mark’s career.

Moderator: Former Trustee Paul J. Vidich ’72, P’00, ’03 will provide the introduction and moderate the discussion and alumni Q & A.

Middletown on the Map, Concert Series featuring: Jay Hoggard '76, MA'91 Quartet

Jay Hoggard '76, MA'91 has long ranked with the greatest vibraphone innovators. His music is positive, spiritual, uplifting, and happy, and he seamlessly blends Jazz and Gospel roots with African Marimba rhythms. Jay's performance repertoire represents the three B's of the Jazz tradition (Blues, Bop and Ballads).

Featuring students' research from AFAM307: Black Middletown Lives with their instructor, Jesse Nasta, Visiting Assistant Professor of African American Studies and Executive Director, Middlesex County Historical Society.

In collaboration and with performances by acclaimed actor, singer, and Assistant Professor of Theater Maria-Christina Oliveras and actor and cellist David Blasher.

Hear from artists, Michael Yamashita '71, Photographer, Brooks Kraft '87, P'23, Photographer, Daniele Anastasion '01, Writer and Director and Mary Robertson '01, Documentary Showrunner and Director on how they employ different mediums to approach their work in documenting subjects. 

Moderated by Randall MacLowry '86, Assistant Professor of the Practice in Film Studies and Co-Director of the Wesleyan Documentary Project.

Join President’s Cabinet members Amin Abdul-Malik Gonzalez '96, Vice President and Dean of Admission and Financial Aid, and Alison Williams '81, Vice President for Equity & Inclusion/Title IX Officer, for a conversation on how the events of the past year have impacted the student experience at Wesleyan. Amin and Alison will share insights from their unique perspectives while also looking back at their own time as students. This event will be moderated by Wesleyan Trustee Christine Pina '91, Chief Advancement Officer at Miss Porter’s School.

An audience Q&A will be offered and we encourage you to submit questions in advance of the event to Dana Coffin at dcoffin@wesleyan.edu.

Pie Pops with Candace Nelson '96

Have a sweet tooth or like to bake? Spend an hour with accomplished pastry chef and co-founder of Sprinkles, Candace Nelson '96 learning how to make Pie Pops!

Introduction by Jennifer Low '06, “Sugar Rush” winner and owner of the Frosted Fox.

Essentials:
Plastic Wrap
Rolling Pin
Food Processor
Pastry brush
6 inch lollipop or treat sticks
biscuit cutters or 3 inch cookie cutters in circle or heart shape

Optional:
Small fondant plunger/cutters (about 1- 2 cm)
cellophane and ribbon for packaging

Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
16 TBSP unsalted butter, sliced, very cold
Approximately 1/2 cup ice water
Your favorite preserve or Nutella (for the filling)

Cardinal Cocktail Hour

Learn to make our Signature Cardinal Cocktail, the Middletown Margarita, and Mocktail, the Return to Campus, with Matt Winn '92, Chair of the Alumni Association.

Middletown Margarita
2 ounces of your preferred blanco tequila
1/2 ounce Aperol
3/4 ounce lime juice
1/4 ounce agave
2 slices of jalapeno pepper
2 muddled strawberries
black sea salt rim and garnish with a lime wedge

Combine all ingredients into a shaker tin. Add ice to tin and glass. Shake and strain into glass over ice and garnish.

Return to Campus
1 1/2 ounces hibiscus tea
1 ounce lime juice
3/4 ounce simple syrup
top off with ginger beer
mint garnish

Combine all ingredients into Collins glass add ice. Top with ginger beer and garnish

Cardinal Conversations: Dynamics of Women Coaching Men -- A Coach’s Perspective and Discussion

Today our society is working to break down intersectionality barriers: gender, racial, sexual orientation, and others. Similar efforts in the sports arena have led to an increased awareness at the secondary, collegiate, and professional levels of gender roles in coaching. While news outlets report strides made recently in women overcoming other barriers in sports, work remains in reaching gender equality for women coaches in the gymnasium and on the field.

Wesleyan Athletics Advantage Program (A+) invites you to a discussion about gender roles in college coaching. We will be joined by Adjunct Professor of Physical Education and Head Men’s & Women’s Squash Coach, Shona Kerr.

In this discussion, four Class of '86 television writers -- Jennifer Flackett, David Kohan, Becky Mode and Ayelet Waldman -- will discuss their current projects, their creative process, changes in the industry and how Wesleyan helped shape them as writers. The panel will then open for questions on television writing. Moderated by Class of '86 actor Willie Garson.

Pedro Pietri's "The Masses are Asses"

Pedro Pietri's "The Masses are Asses" radio play on WESU directed by Visiting Instructor of Theater Miranda Haymon '16

The Masses are Asses (1974) by Pedro Pietri is an absurdist satire that exposes issues of social class, parodies the notion of the American Dream, and plays with political parody. The play takes place in either a fancy restaurant in Paris or a tenement building bathroom in the South Bronx. The plot revolves around two characters who vamp, mimic, and instigate each other and their values.

WESEMINAR Climate Mitigation: Three Perspectives
Hear from three Wesleyan alumni as they discuss climate mitigation from various perspectives within the field of Environmental research. Alyson Myers ’81, President of the Fearless Fundwill discuss her experience working in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean to find global solutions to help combat climate change. Tracey Osborne ’91, an Associate Professor in the Department of Management of Complex Systems at the University of California Merced and Director of UC Center for Climate Justice, will join our panel as well. She will share her work on climate change mitigation in tropical forests and the important role of Indigenous land use practices based on research conducted in Mexico and the Amazon. We will also be joined by Chris Wilmers '95, a wildlife ecologist and Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He will discuss how animals impact the carbon cycle and their roles in carbon sequestration.
Our program will be moderated by Barry Chernoff, Robert K. Schumann Chair of Environmental Studies and Director of the College of the Environment, at Wesleyan University.
